Reviewed 5 May 2007

The Boat Haven Spa resort fell far shy of the description given in brochures & one would wonder whether or not they were talking about the same place. The place was very dated and stuffy and was not very clean at all. There was a very steep driveway leading up to what appeared to be a worn hotel well overdue for some major maintenance. The hand rails required painting and the glass doors and windows leading into the room were dirty and hadn’t been cleaned for sometime with fingermarks and a dirty film over the glass. The general appearance was disappointing; however there was a nice pool out the front. The balcony offered little or no privacy, and the views were looking over some dirty construction site where there were trucks and loud banging going on where this site will continue under construction for the next 4 to 5 years.

When we first arrived we reception tired to tell us we had to pay more, when I had paid in full over the internet, and it was until I objected strongly and advised I could prove through my booking we were fully paid for that the receptionist sheepishly responded with ‘well I’ll look into it’ and made no apology for the sneaky efforts to have us try and pay more. The staff were not friendly and gave a very poor impression and I thought this too was very disappointing.

We were only given one set of keys, and had to ask for more and even though 3 adults had booked in we were only given two sets of keys. Only one set worked to open the security screen door. Once we entered the rooms the place was very dated and old and there were only two towels so I had to go and ask for towels for the third person and for hand towels.

The TV didn’t work until I looked around and had to reconnect the cables to the rear of it, and the bathroom was very dated and it took ages for the hot water to come through. After running the water for about 4 to 5 mins & I thought I was going to have to settle for a cold shower.

The general and overall standard was average to poor and far from what it suggested as a hotel and spa, it fell more into the category of a run down, road side inn, and I have stayed in backpackers with better facilities. The glasses in the cupboards were old and hadn’t been cleaned properly in ages and hygiene was at the most basic to low standards. I felt once I had looked around there were far better choices and at cheaper rates where you could stay and enjoy your visit to Airlie Beach.

We stayed for five nights and had a good-sized room with a balcony overlooking the sea. The apartment was well-appointed and quite plainly decorated but suited the (potentially) warm climate. We stayed in mid-February and did experience quite a bit of bad weather - wind and rain. We were told that it was fairly usual for the time of year - be warned! When the sun did shine the view was beautiful.
The pool at the Boathaven Spa Resort was a good feature and was about 25m long but not too deep - 1.25/1.5m.
The reception staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly with advice on trips in the area. Also, we had a problem with the dishwasher during our stay. It wasn't fixed but they did give us a discount for the inconvenience.
It takes about five minutes to walk into the centre of Airlie Beach where there is a good choice of restaurants and bars.

We booked this hotel based solely on all the rave reviews on Trip Advisor & I must say I was sorry we did. We arrived at Hamilton Island Airport & took an hour+ ferry ride (beautiful) to Airlie Beach. Along the way the ferry stopped at Hamilton Island, Daydream Island, etc. & I kept seeing nice beachfront hotels & got so excited wondering what ours would be like. Well, once in Shute Harbor Marilyn (at Boathaven) had said to just hop on a bus & it is easy to find the resort-- not the case at all. We asked the bus driver where it was & he had no idea. We eventually just stopped in the middle of town & proceeded to ask a few more people where it was & finally someone knew. We had to walk back about 10 minutes - weighted down with luggage & then up a tremendously steep driveway (& I'm not someone who is usually fazed by things like this) & then into a somewhat ordinary hillside hotel. It has views of "muddy bay" & if you try to crack your sliding door at night to get some fresh air you get to listen to the sound of cars whizzing by constantly. It is NOT on the waterside & you also overlook a lot of construction equipment as they are in the early stages of building a new pier across from the hotel. The rooms are dated, dingy & have aqua bed spreads. As another reviewer wrote - NOTES of what to do & what not to do are EVERYwhere. They truly become annoying & you feel like you are at a youth hostel instead of a hotel where you've paid good money. PLUS, a little surprise you get is that you learn that you receive one (1) roll of toilet paper & if you need another it is at a charge of $1. NO JOKE. You also must take out your own garbage, etc or they threaten you with a hefty fee. I was so dismayed by the cheapness of this place & could equate it to a US Motel 6. Upon coming into our room we immediately did not like it & were so disappointed so we went down & tried to cancel our last night (we had booked 3) hoping to find something more up our alley but a somewhat standoffish Marilyn said no early departures. I told her her policy said you could cancel with 24 hours notice (which we were giving) but then she said not once we check in. So, if we had not given our credit card a mere 10 minutes earlier we would've been able to cancel but because we did we were, sadly, locked in. Don't stay here. And, Airlie Beach is ok - I kept expecting to see Carlos Murphy's & 20 somethings talking Jello shots, it's that kind of town. It even had a pole dancing competition the night we were there. Enough said.

Now I say I don't know about the view because it's a view of a construction site. There's a development happening infront of the resort in the bay which is apparently going on for the next 5 years where the noise of reverse beepers drove us crazy.

Also at this time the resort pool was closed which I was meant we spent all out time at the public lagoon.

I found it very frustrating that the hotel didn't advise us of construction noise or the pool being closed even when I phoned to confirm days before our stay. We had considered staying at another hotel before booking this one which were courteous enough to advise us of construction noise occuring near their hotel.

We stayed in a bayside studio which was very nice and comfortable and the hotel was convieniently close to the main strip of Airlie beach.

We stayed in the Bayside Studio - sea views and the room exceeded our expectations. It had a great view and was very clean. The studio was also a good size with a good size balcony too. The pool was nice.
The only thing we didn't realize when we booked it is that it is a walk to get to the main Airlie Beach- only about 5-10 minutes, one way is up hill but that isn't too bad...not a deserted road so you don't feel unsafe walking there.
Definitely recommend this as close to everything but yet you get out of the business of the main strip.

Boathaven Spa Resort is a great place to stay in Airlie Beach if you want to be a little outside the main street but still in walking distance of everything, have the possibility to prepare your own meals and enjoy a beautiful view from the balcony on the bay.
We stayed in a studio each of the two nights incl. a kitchenette and a spa on the balcony - with break because we did a three day sailing trip in the Whitsundays in between which was awesome.
Marilyn was really very friendly and helpful and stored our main luggage during our sailing trip to which we only took one small bag. We didn`t have to be concerned about our luggage at any time.
Airlie Beach is a great little town with lots of bars and restaurants and nice shops to discover. Don`t miss Cold Rocks ice cream!

We would recommend anyone to stay at Boathaven Spa Resort in Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays. Gary and Marilyn Andersen were the perfect hosts.
The recommended tours and hospitality was exceptional.
Our Bayside Spa Apartment was fantastic. Sitting out on the balcony in the evening overlooking the Coral Sea was romantic.
The apartment was very clean and comfortable with all the facilities of home.
Thank you for having us
