“Fantastic meals and service!”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

All I can say is amazing meals and fantastic service by the waitress! The service at the bar was pretty average. The bar waitress was more interested in the upper bar and the young men in there instead of acknowledging my husband and I. Very disappointing. For a starter my husband and i shared the lemon pepper squid, fantastic! I ordered a medium rare scotch and it was cooked to perfection. My husband ordered a chicken snitzel. Was great to see a snitzel freshly crumbed in the kitchen instead of a pre ordered snitzel. Very impressed. The waitress was neat and tidy and had great manners. Will defiantly come back for the food but the bar service is a deal breaker for me.

i stayed here a few months ago and the only thing that was a major let down was the room i stayed in. not only was it dated but was not as clean as it could have been. there was a dank musty smell and mould on the windowsill. i understand i was in a budget room and paid very little but i thought a clean room wasnt much to ask for. other than that my stay was fantastic. the hospitality of the young bubbly girl at the bar was insanely good. she went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. also the food that came out of that kitchen was more than expected. being an old pub i did expect and was looking forward to 'good ol pub food' but what i got was so much more. a very young chef that is obviously passionate about her work. is good to see and very enjoyable to watch. thank you to the empire hotel for my stay and hopefully soon those rooms get some TLC

We returned to this historic hotel for a three night stay after having visited for a meal 7 years ago.

We were both very disappointed. What I was not aware of when pre-booking is that the place is now "budget" accommodation. The rooms are not much different to when the place was built over 100 years ago. That in itself is not a detraction but when facilities are outdated it becomes a different matter. It is obvious very little has been done to maintain or even upgrade the facilities.

The service provided to the room was good being serviced daily. The personal service from most staff was also very good with one exception of a barmaid who liked to be rude and argue.

The meals were good but usual pub-fare rather than quality dining which is what we remembered and helped our decision to come here.

The over all atmosphere was quiet and it did not appear to be a well frequented hotel.

I am disappointed that it is not a venue I could heartily recommend.

The meals were fantastic! If it wasn't for that we wouldn't have returned on the second night for dinner.
The service at the bars was terrible. Blunt, rude, a "whatya want!?" Attitude.
The second night we were trying to order drinks in the main bar. The bar attendant was too busy chatting up some locals as we waited...and waited....my husband got his wallet out and held it on the counter to indicate that we intended on spending money...waited...then another two local men came in, walked up to the bar, and got served instantly! Before us! And she had to walk past us to get to them. Oh dear.

stayed in the ensuite double room for one night and loved it. as many other already wrote, it is an old hotel and probably needs some refurbishing, but shower, toilet worked and the bed was even very comfy. friendly staff, good wi-fi. continental breakfast absolutely fine!
even my bicycle could stay in the lobby:)

OMGoodness, one simply would not expect to find this quality of food in a place the size of Queenstown. I had the Pork dish and it was superb, my partner had the Vegetarian stack and it was with out doubt the best he has ever eaten.Thank you so much
