Having eaten dinner the previous night at the Empire Hotel over the road, and found it merely "OK" I thought I'd give the Mt Lyell Inn restaurant a go. It is a very basic space with a bar and poker machines in the background - a bit off-putting - but I was pleasantly surprised by my meal of Filet Mignon with chips & salad for $30 - it was excellent steak and the salad also was well above average. Definitely worth a try in a town with limited food options. The serving was large but there was "quality" there as well & not just volume. Other food coming out of the kitchen looked good too and prices for mains started at $17 for a roast.

We crashed into this place after a very long drive from Mount Field National Park via Lake Saint Clare National Park with very low expectations as the place doesn't look like much from the outside... walking in the reception didn't help to change this perception as the reception is located right next to the bar, in from of some slot machine and there were lots of blokes smoking on the back. After paying low fee for the night's stay (which convinced us to stay here as everything else in the town was much more expensive than expected), we were kindly surprised with a fully equipped and clean room.

At that point you realised the place is just an old motel that has been upgraded over many many years without any change to its exterior of its mining era (I am not even sure if the town still works as a mining centre).

Sadly the kitchen was closed at the time or our arrival and departure but overheard someone giving high compliments to the burger and chicken schnitzel they were eating. Had to go back to our rooms that night and eat some sandwiches we had from the afternoon. Everything else was closed in the town...

If you can pass the outside appearance (which probably sounds worst than what it really is) you will be in a good place to spend your night and save some money.

Room Tip: Rooms from the top floor will get less noise from people walking over... although there is not lot o...

I've stayed here a couple of times and it's a great place. Off street parking. Very good restaurant downstairs (nothing fancy but well cooked meals). Close to the train and the main street. Beds are great. Had trouble with the TV but someone was able to help with that. Bit weird having a sink in the bedroom but we coped. Clean, quiet and functional. Great value.

We didn't stay here, but we did eat, and to be honest, I was surprised! I'm no expert when it comes to food, but I like to eat and this place was actually good! I ordered chicken schnitzel and had it with vegetables, and the veggies were awesome! Amazing pumpkin, cauliflower, carrots and potatoes - I would rate them as some of the best I've had in ages! Yes, as other people have said, you're in a bar next to the pokies and there is Sky TV on (nice to see cricket rather than football for a change though) but this is a mining town, not a capital city, and the fact you can get a decent meal for a reasonable price when choice is fairly limited is great. I was staying in a camper van a bit out of town so it was nice to eat out for first time on the trip. From what I've heard, Queenstown isn't quite what it used to be, in fact there are actually trees visible these days, and although not a tourist gold mine (pardon the pun), I would definitely recommend hanging around for a day or two.

rooms are old but clean you have to remember that queenstown town is a old fashion boom town so things are a bit different there.

Rooms very basic and looks like the owners bought cheap coloured paint that no one else wanted. Our room was grass green with purple trims....not a good fashion statement.

Reminds me of a sturdy mining town motel with not much character.

Rooms clean though and warm during the night.

In hindsight, if we had a choice (and didn't want to drive 1-2 hours to another town), we possible would not have stayed there.

Room Tip: Suggest one checks out the room before committing for the night.

What, you don't like retro! But seriously, you're right, the new owners did "inherit" some interesting colour choices and have been working hard to modernise. We're not trying to compete with the flasher establishments though, nor charge the big rates, but we're clean, fresh and have all the usual facilities. You'll be much happier if you come again.
You've given a very good travel tip - we actively encourage prospective guests to check out their room and after the changes that have been made it seems we're being a lot more favourably viewed

Dined here on our second night in Q'Town and had a great dinner. It is a little disconcerting to walk through a small colourful pokie area to get to the dining area but what the heck!
Pick a table and then order at the bar. Bar staff very helpful and recommended an excellent bottle of wine. The boys had Pumpkin soup and roast Pork and I had rare Carpet-bag steak (perfectly cooked and tender) and stunning brandy snap style desert. Prices were also very good for all courses - was a great dinner. Dining area also light and bright with afternoon sunshine.
