If you want to stay in Cessnock and be able to easily walk to the shops, supermarkets and club then this is a good choice. But it does enough without giving it the extra edge it needs to push it into the great category.

The rooms are big enough and clean enough but things add up. Yes the showers are abysmal. Stayed here 3 times and tried a different room each time purely on the hope that 1 of the showers works better but alas no. The combination of water saving and deposits building up in the shower heads mean that it is like standing under one of those garden pressure sprayers. You get wet but only just! A cot being left in the room was careless.

But my main bug bear is that on two occasions a coach turned up to pick up daytrippers to the wineries and decided to wait outside the windows of the rooms with its engine running for 15-20 minutes. Both the smell of the fumes and the noise was unbearable. So much so that I decided I would try staying at the Potters around the corner and down the road.

The Best Western in Cessnock is an average Motel. Being reasonably new it is clean and well furnished with a comfy bed. The Motel is in central Cessnock, right in the Coles car park and opposite the Cessnock (Rugby League) Supporters Club, who own the Motel. The rooms are spread over three levels, with a car park below (a little squeezy) so you can't park outside your room, but have to lug your bags along the front of the building and up in the lift. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was very quiet, despite proximity to car parks and club, everything worked, not a bad place. The one downer about this place is the shower. I realise water must be saved, but we also must wash. The shower heads force water through tiny holes to give a shower spray on the molecular level, the entire bathroom fills with a miasma of water droplets and washing one's hair is a major undertaking. Other than that, standard motel in the centre of the Hunter (mmmmm.....Wine)

This hotel/motel is OK - not great, not bad just OK. It's well located right in the heart of Cessnock with supermarkets and shopping centres and the main drag of Cessnock about a minutes walk away.

The hotel is modern and rather characterless/souless. The rooms are comfortable, clean and quiet and have everything you need and that's really it. As another reviewer said - 'a good place to overnight in' on the way to somewhere else. Don't stay here if you are looking to be inspired by the wine country of the Hunter Valley.

I should add that the lady at reception was very friendly and welcoming but it would be great if they could just inject the place with a little more character - maybe I have too high expectations of Best Western?

Comfortable hotel but nothing special. Good for an overnight stay. Just what I would expect from a Best Western. Clean room with everything you could want for a short stay>

Travelled down from Sydney to stay in this motel for one night. It was a weekday so it was relatively cheap. Arrived in the late afternoon and check in was very fast and promt. Reception closes at 8:30pm and re-opens at 6:30am. Anytime after these hours require the room access card. Room was quite large, contained a sofa bed along with a queen size bed which was clean and two tv's. Overall the room was well furnished. The hotel is situated right next to the local shopping centres with a supporters club right situated right across.
Ate dinner the the chinese restaurant in the club. It was rather pricey and didn't taste extremely good. Was rather disappointed with it.
The only problem with the room was there was a noise from the air ventilator in the bathroom that continued for the whole night. It's a great budget hotel and value for money.

Stayed here on an impromptu weekend when everything was booked out. Only cost $140 for one night and that was on a long weekend. All in all I would say it is excellent value. The room was clean and recently renovated; the bed was really comfortable and the room was quiet. Didn't try the breakfast as we opted for one of the local wineries. There are no real dining options nearby so it is best to go to a winery about 10 minutes out of town and get a cab back ($15-20). All in all it's great value in a great part of Australia.

  • Liked — modern, clean rooms
  • Disliked — the lack of restaurants and general nightlife in the town

The Motor Inn is a newly opened modern hotel in the centre of Cessnock. The reception and rooms were immaculate and well furnished. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable locals who helped us arrange our wine tasting tours. The continental breakfast was a little disappointing but cheap.

The hotel is operated by the owners of the rugby supporters club just over the road. All residents are granted temporary membership of the club for the duration of their stay. Cessnock isn't the most lively of places and the club was easily the best place to spend the evenings with good food and a live band.

Cessnock is a small town and this hotel was much better than we'd expected to find. A good base for exploring the Hunter Valley.
