I'm glad I didn't take much notice of some previous reviews as if I did I would not have discovered such a wonderful restaurant. Staff were lovely and the food was exceptional. Very reasonably priced wine and the food was great. We will be back this time next year for sure. Congratulations Dorsal.

We should have followed our instincts and chosen elsewhere on this occasion. However, we had been to the Dorsal before, and wanted a special evening. Too bad it was thoroughly disappointing.

When we called to reserve a 7:00pm dinner for two, we were told there was a party of 45 booked for 7:30pm, and that we should come early. However, when we arrived at 6:45pm, half the group were already, and were watching football on the large screen TV placed (thoughtfully?) on the mezzanine level which also contained our reserved table. The waitress insisted we take a table for 4 beside the window, despite our request for a table for two nearby. "This will be better, and we won't have to set another table". Warning bells were ringing.

We ordered mains, and decided to have dessert rather than entrees. The wine came, and the waitress asked if we'd like the music turned down. Too bad the music was inaudible above the TV football - "perhaps you could turn the football down instead?", I asked. "Oh, I couldn't do that - I'd need one of the male waiters to ask them to turn it down". More alarm bells.

The main courses arrived, and ever so slowly the group moved to their tables on the lower level. A waitress turned the TV off, and we enjoyed two very nice main courses. This was the only highlight of the night.

We asked to see the dessert menu - "would you mind waiting until we've served the main course to the group?". "No. not at all, but could we see the menus anyway?". Novice waiter goes to request assistance from experienced waitress, and returns. "I'm sorry, I can't bring the menus now". We're getting annoyed - "could you ask again?". Waiter returns to advise that "the chef has advised that desserts won't be served tonight"!

At this point we are angry, and seek eye contact from "head" waitress - none forthcoming. So we decided to pay the bill at the counter and discuss the situation. "Who's in charge here?". The only person with any apparent experience says "I suppose I am". We put our case, and told her that it was unacceptable. At this point a male kitchen hand (?) decided to intervene - "the kitchen is very busy and you're being unreasonable to expect service". Well, he didn't exactly say this, but that was effectively his argument. Anyway, he was out of place, out of order, rude and arrogant.

The "head" waitress apologised, said she would be counseling Mr Kitchen Hand, and that she would pass our complaint to the owner. She scores a "pass", the chef a "credit" for excellent food, but the restaurant a "fail" for under-staffing, as well as under-training what staff it has.

We won't be going back.

Yes it was a busy Sunday morning and we were warned of a half hour wait. There were three of us. Our order was taken after about 30minutes. After 50minutes and three requests we got water, the excuse being that they didn't have any clean jugs. Then our hot drinks finally came. By this times ell under half the tables were occupied.
After 1hr10minues, when the table that arrived 30minutes after us was getting their food, we went to the counter, told them why we were going, paid for our drinks and left. They didn't even care or apologise.
We are now getting service at Beach Bums.
No stars at all from us.

Dorsal is opposite the beach in Forster. The outlook is fantastic, however the food lets this place down. And service, while OK, the stewardess did not know how to open a cork bottle of wine

Service was very poor, the food was well cooked but overly complex with an unnecessary number of ingredients . There seemed to be a lack of communication between the kitchen and the floor.
