Melba House Boutique Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #1 of 19 Katoomba B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 17 October 2010

We found Melba House to be an excellent bed and breakfast positioned on a quiet part of Katoomba and situated a leisurely 10 minute walk from the main shopping area and a 15 minutes brisk walk from the train station - but note that Katoomba is a hilly town. Sue served superb breakfasts with a broad menu and generous servings which were freshly prepared. We had the choice of breakfast in the well proportioned room or on the verandah, taking in the morning warmth of the sun. Sue provided a personalised touch by making gluten free muffins (in recognition that the cakes on offer were not suitable for a ceoliac) and ensured that the breakfast was also gluten free. The house is situated in an attractive garden setting. Additional benefits include cakes, fresh fruit bowl, complimentary port and a lovely flower arrangement in the room. The room itself is very comfortable, large and furnished to a high standard. The bedding is up there with the best. And let's not forget to mention Issy the cavalier - she got us well trained in providing morning pats.

My wife and I usually stay at B&Bs on short stays, particularly in the country. My first reaction when I received a quote was that it was too expensive, but it read well so we decided to give it a try. We were well rewarded for this is a first-class establishment judged on our four criteria of location, host, room and breakfast.
Melba House (c1905) is located in a quiet residential area about 1000m from the railway station and 500m from the shopping and restaurants centre. Our Host Sue provided free transfers to and from the station so distances were no problem, albeit Katoomba is a hilly town! The circuit tourist buses also have a stop less than 200m away.
The House has three bedroom suites named after Australian Divas. We had the Dame Edna, which after inspecting all three, we considered second best after Dame Nellie (Melba). However, each is attractively decorated, well-equipped and maintained, comfortable and roomy. We slept very well.
Breakfasts were superb with a broad menu and generous servings freshly prepared and delivered to our room or to a verandah location at times of our choosing. Memorable.
Other notable features include an attractive garden, home-made "Devonshire" teas on arrival, scrumptious help-yourself cakes available all hours, a daily fresh fruit bowl and flowers in the room, and a very good DVD library for guest's use.
Dame Nellie Melba was regarded as hard-to-please, but she would have been happy here.

Our stay at Melba House was everything I imagined it to be. This was my first stay in a B&B and the comfortable and homely atmosphere was exactly was I had expected. Our room was very large with a massive bed, a fireplace (with new stocks of wood everyday), a comfy couch, plasma tv & dvd player.
The room was beautifully decorated and cleaned evryday, but it was the little touches that made Melba House special; the freshly baked cakes for afternoon tea, the 'mink' blanket, the plentiful dvd's, the restaurant reccommendations & the spa with beautiful salts & soaps.
Sue and friendly Izzy were the perfect hosts, and Sue is a great cook, her breakfasts are great.

Owner Sue Handley serves up a delightful "menu' of luxury accommodation, charm, convenience, comfort, and a welcome as wide as Australia! The actual breakfast menu is yummy, long, and varied, and Sue cooks up the best poached eggs and oatmeal I've ever had! (If you're nice, she'll share her recipes!) Co--host Issy, a cuddly cocker spaniel, appears from time to time to add an extremely well-behaved and loving touch. The rooms are beautifully finished, extremely comfortable, and lovingly decorated, and thoughtful touches abound. Each room has its own sitting area, perfect for curling up for a good read, or for watching one of the extensive library of DVDs Sue thoughtfully provides. The fine Victorian house is a short walk to Katoomba's lively center, a perfect stopping off point from which to explore the Blue Mountains. Sue is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet, always ready with a big smile and expert advice. Keep walking those hills to work off the delicious, freshly home-made cake waiting for you on your return! Highly recommended; I will be staying here again!

Melba House was a great surprise set in a quiet Katoomba street the house has a lovely charm and elegance about it. Our room the Dame Nellie was decorated stylishly in black and white and being able to leisurely eat the great breakfast in the room was a bonus.
Sue (our host) did a terrific job of welcoming us and assisting in any way she could. All in all it made our first visit to the famed Blue Mountains a treat!

We arrived Sunday around Lunchtime and the Host Sue directed us to a lovely warm cafe in Katoomba called The Common Ground for lunch. It was within walking distance of Melba House. It served great European style food and moderately priced. On a cold winter day it had us feeling we were on a holiday.

My room was called Dame Joan, Edwardian in style, very comfortable with a lounge area TV and DVD player with a refrigerator to store a bottle of wine for a pre dinner drink.. The Queen size bed gave me an excellent sleep. The furnishing were very rich and I felt I was having a a real treat.

There was choice for breakfast which was hot and delivered on time.

Sue gave us good ideas to explore Katoomba and the Blue Mountains. There are two tourist buses that have the hop on hop off system which was an easy way to get around as we did not have a car. Sue collected us from Katoomba Station and delivered us back when we departed. I would recommend Melba House for a Romantic short break or a place to stay with friends
