The Cecil Guesthouse

Been staying here for years for the music festival weekend and seen the old place in various incarnations. Under new management again, management seems to change every couple of years, and definitely back to a guesthouse and not a hostel anymore. The current managers are continuing the previous managers refurbishment and are doing a good job. The problem is that some serious money needs to be spent on the buildings structure and the owners arent willing to spend the money. For the price its still a good place to stay. Great location and its nice to stay in a place where guests talk to each other. Always found it to be a friendly place, both the staff and the guests.

The Cecil looks pretty ramshackle from outside, but inside it is all old-fashioned comfort. The shared bathrooms are dated but well-maintained, as are the bedrooms. Just off the main street, it was very convenient for the Blue Mountains Ukulele Festival held at The Carrington, which was the reason I was in Katoomba. Good complimentary Continental breakfast in the sunny dining room which opened onto the gardens. Very good value all round. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Try to get a room upstairs on the east side overlooking the valley.

The Cecil's friendly new owners are working hard to turn it round after years of neglect. They deserve to succeed. It's comfortable, clean, centrally positioned - and you get a very good complimentary breakfast thrown in. Excellent value!

When we arrived at this guest house it was obvious it needs some TLC. But once inside our opinion changed. The rooms, though small, are spotless and the beds very comfortable. We had a standard double room without an ensuite..but the shared bathrooms are easily accessible on each floor and they were always spotless. The games room and loungeroom were a great place to socialise. We met numerous overseas guests particularly from Scaninavian countries.
A wholesome continental breakfast is included in the room rate.
The real advantage is that the Cecil is right in the heart of town and just 100 meters from the supermarket, bus stops and the railway station.
Great value, friendly helpful staff and in prime position.

Room Tip: Room 30, 31, 32 have the best panoramic views. and enjoy the morning sun. Rooms 15 and 24 have ensu...

The guesthouse is more hostel then hotel. The hotel needs ALOT of maintenance to make the place liveable. The windows are rotten and the wind blows through the frames. We had an ensuite with the "best view in the hotel". The view was beautiful, bgut that is where the beauty stops. There were LARGE COBWEBS hanging from the ceiling. The curtains at the windows are old shower curtains. We were going to mention the cobwebs to the front desk but nobody was ever at the front desk.
The location was convenient.
But, all in all, for the price we paid, was too much for the pitiful condition of the building. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone

Hi there, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. Thankfully we have dealt/are dealing with all of the above since you've left. Windows are currently being fixed up and re-painted, new staff and a new cleaning regime takes care of the cobwebs. The curtains we use are not shower curtains, however, and never have been. We are a small guesthouse which requires staff to work reception, as well as deal to all requests to accommodate our guests. Unfortunately this means we can not always be present at reception. Thankfully is a sign at reception advising to press the pager if you need assistance - we are always more than happy to help and never far away.

Located on a side street off Katoomba's main road, the sign for The Cecil Guesthouse can be easy to miss but it is an easy walk from the station. Stepping into this place is a step back in time - into soft maroon carpets, dark wood paneling, and antiquarian furnishings.

My room was clean and cozy with plenty of warm blankets for a cold Spring, a washbasin, and an electric radiator. What I enjoyed most was opening the old cupboard doors to find hundreds of messages scrawled by earlier guests. The guesthouse is also equipped with sparkling clean, heated bathrooms. The receptionist was friendly and even helped with directions to other regions of the Blue Mountains.

I didn't get to use the games room, but the dining area is airy and perfect for soaking up some sun in the morning (simple breakfast buffet provided, just wash up after yourself). Wish there had been more guests around as it was very quiet! Would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the Blue Mountains.
