“Squirreled away off the main street”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2014

My daughter and I stayed here for two nights and thought the place was great value for money. The linen was crisp and clean, the breakfast generous, and there was a lot of space in the communal area to just sit and relax. It's situated down a little lane off the main street and can be easily missed if you don't keep an eye out. The staff were relaxed and very laid back - check in was a breeze. Would definitely recommend if you're thinking of visiting the Blue Mountains.

This hotel is not for those who like flawless modernity. The basics are all there - extremely clean and new linens, comfortable beds, and powerful showers. What requires some imagination and open-mindedness is the decor. An old boarding house - the wall paper, carpets and furnishings all seems to date between 1930 and 1970 (please note that I've put the cleanliness as average because although the linens were so clean, the hotel is dilapidated). We absolutely loved it. In a world of yuppification, this place is a breath of fresh air. You can just feel the history in it.
Wish there was a rating for "charm" - I would give the cecil 5 points.

We call the Cecil "faded glory" because it's a run down once grand guest house. We love the price ($80 for two midweek off peak including continental breakfast), the informality and we love the fact that it's tatty. Windows don't close properly and lightbulbs are sometimes scarce but we've always slept well and love the common areas where you can sit around and drink your own alcohol while playing pool. We have noticed that the cleaning standards are worse than previous trips but we will always return as we feel relaxed. Don't come here if you want romance, luxury or daily servicing. Go somewhere else and pay twice the price.

location good....but that is far as it goes. rooms were not ready, office a rubbish tip. Rooms well !way beyond repair.Old filthy...The staff on duty when we got there were on another planet. We left to book another hotel. We rang the staff on afternoon duty, he had no idea we were not there and were never going to be there, but assured us no charge, which is what i would have expected.

Room Tip: rooms choose NONE

We stayed here for one night . The location is excellent , only a short walk from the train station .

The guest house is very old and is being currently renovated. Our room was quite clean and comfortable , The staff was extremely helpful. Lots of eating places close by , there is a grocery store across the street as well. I would recommend it for a budge traveler.

Instead of paying for the tour , we walked to the echo point ( three sisters) from the hotel and then walked down to the bottom of the valley and took the train up ($14) and then the public bus back to the hotel . The walk to echo point is about 3 km, the trek down to valley is pretty steep.
If you want to cut down on walking you could take the public bus to the echo point and then back ( 2.20 each way ). The bus stops close to Cecil guest house.

I spent a lovely time at the Cecil. This house is very charming. It's old & some things need fixing, but this is being done constantly (the new managers, Hemi & Steph, only took over this place 4 month ago). Everybody at the Cecil was very helpful & made sure I enjoyed my time there.
The best thing about my stay was my hike with Hemi. I wanted to go off the tracks full of tourists & exactly there he took me. No people, only the sounds of nature & spectacular scenery! Unforgettable!!! If you want to go hiking I definitely recommend Hemi as a guide.

We stayed here on NYE and while the staff were friendly and our room clean, the guesthouse is extremely run down and not managed well. The steps are broken walking in, no one seemed to know which room was ours, no one was around when we tried to pay when leaving and there was rubbish overflowing in the outside bins. I felt sad bc it was once a beautiful guesthouse but it has been left neglected over the last few years.
I do not recommend anyone stay here and for $100 a night a rip off.
