A beautiful period hotel, with many nooks and crannies to explore and find stylish lounge and library areas.

My husband and I and two friends enjoyed 2 nights in this delightful hotel. Everything was wonderful from the rooms to the breakfast and the included dinner and afternoon tea,

Pros:
Exudes “old worlde” charm.

Cons (not applicable to “Traditional” room):
No air conditioning. Curtains do not draw. Shower hardly works. Car parking spaces scarce. Breakfast is threadbare. Room rates seem to be a lot higher than comparative hotels. No espresso coffee is available at breakfast.

Will probably not stay here again.

I fell in love with the Carrington decades ago and have never found a valid excuse to change my original opinion.

I now organize a hiking group (National Park Ramblers) and take up to twenty people through the Jamison Valley twice each month. Drinks afterwards in Champagne Charlie’s Bar and the guest lounge are optional, but seldom turned down. Most know the Carrington from their previous experiences, but it’s an eye-opener for many of my younger members. Some years ago I took the flight deck and cabin crew from a United Airlines flight up there and they were amazed. Mostly from LAX and SFX, they had never seen such elegance and charm. They still rave about it!

In a world so focused on glitter and pretentiousness, the sheer elegance and dedication to service is something rarely found in today’s world.

I do rate this place for somewhere with old world charm / warmth but the accommodation is pretty dire. Admittedly, I have only stayed in a shared bathroom room so cannot comment on en-suite rooms but they are quite poor.

However, I will start with the pros. This place categorically needs to be visited in Winter after a big long walk around the Blue Mountain trails. There is nothing better than walking into the bar area with its immense open fire and warming up over a few drinks. Pure old school elegance & charm. The restaurant is also tip top – excellent infact. It is conveniently located by Katoomba station and I suggest, after said warming drinks, get yourself back to that station and wherever you need to go rather than opt to stay there.

Never would we usually stay somewhere with a shared bathroom but we booked a standard room without knowing about the shared facilities – I didn’t actually think to ask, silly me obviously! A shared bathroom wasn’t the end of the world – infact the facilities were quite impressive. However, you know someone has had a shower before you and it hasnt been cleaned - just felt grubby. The rooms themselves were dim & pretty basic – really quite unimpressive. Our curtains didn’t shut and the carpet was grimey. There was a coffee mark on the table and it generally had an unclean feel to it. It wasn’t a particularly comfortable night either. If this was a budget hotel all the above is fine but it certainly isn’t a budget option!!

Honestly, if I was rating the Carrington based on the bar / ambience it would be a defo 5* but it is a hotel and, as such, really falls short of the mark in my opinion. I feel the Carrington is resting on its old reputation as ‘the place to go in the Blue Mountains’ and picks up the tourist trade. Give the accommodation the once over and it would be superb!!

We recently had a very pleasant stay at the Carrington with my sister over from England, we were treated like VIP guests with a bottle of champagne on arrival and very attentive reception staff. A special thankyou to Derek for his expertise and service and the two lovely ladies on reception. We will be back soon as it is one of our most favourite hotels in the Blue Mountains.

We have been going to the Carrington at least once a year, every year, for the past 10 years. It provides such a sense of old world charm and luxury at a reasonable price. The only rooms we haven't tried are the Traditional rooms and have not been disappointed. The staff are friendly and helpful about the local and immediate surronds with knowledge of places to see and go to eat. We have, through the years encouraged our friends to stay at the hotel and they too report of pleasant and happy stays. We look forward to our next visit in June 2011.
