We indulged ourselves with a two night 'special' advertised on the Carrington's website.
We had a big bright and airy colonial room on the first floor. The bathroom was large and modern.
On delightful full bottle of bubbly was also a part of the deal as was a continental breakfast. The range of breads, fruits, yoghurts, nuts and cereal was impressive. Also loved the range of Twinning's tea. This old hotel is old world and has so much character. Just sitting in one of the many lounging areas and enjoying coffee and wine is very restful. There is lots to see and do for a few days. We will definitely return this winter to enjoy the open fires.

The hotel and staff were great. The staff went beyond accomodating us. The breakfast was so yummy. The rooms were big and comfy. It was a shared bath but really not that bad. It was well worth the stay and so very, very clean. Katoomba is such a lovely little town and the Blue Mountains were spectacular. It's too bad it rained the second day we were there so we didn't get to see a lot.

For a nice few romantic days away this is a lovely place to do it. Midweek you have to go outside the hotel to find food and entertainment as there is none in the hotel. This is compensated with having the place practically to yourself, more affordable accommodation. We stayed in the middle of winter. The place is warm, the huge fireplaces have roaring fires. A true taste of yesterday year. You can feel the presence of ghosts!

Breakfast in the dining room each morning is elegant and included in the price of your room.

Room Tip: If you want to use the dining room for an evening meal, try to high teas in the afternoon and ramble in the wine cellar you have to stay on the weekends. There are some brilliant restaurants across the road. The hotel is only a few minutes walk from the rail station and a bus that takes you all over the attractions of Katoomba is straight out the front of the hotel. A place for couples or adults groups. Perfect for weddings.

Katoomba is of a those few towns left whose horizon remains barely altered since it was established as a mountain retreat in the early part of last century. The Carrington was one of the original hotels and its landscaped gardens and art nouveau facade still sing of the character of that time. For most of us, opulence and elitism may not be a trait of our democratic times but certainly the architecture and interior design lend our senses an insight into the aesthetic qualities of the era. When I visit the lovely old hotels of the world I'm looking for an experience that gives me an window into that time. It is a window that helps to remind me of the feelings and sensations of how we have lived and perhaps to awaken my awareness of things we might have lost in our suburban and manufactured lives. Good management has an eye for these details and also knows that in drawing them out, they have identified the unique identity of that heritage gem - essentially it insightful and creative branding.

Alas, the management of the Carrington fail here. There have been sporadic efforts to bring coherence but they remain fractured. The local providore market at the rear is a great idea and someone here has an understanding of how design and product come together. It would be nice to see some continuation of these ideas into the restaurant and overall running of the hotel. Breakfast feels like most of the produce is sourced from the supermarket. The restaurant oozes character but needs better lighting, a cohesive attention to fabric, decor and service. The staff were friendly but their uniforms look like corporate bank tellers. The whole place needs attention to detail and sympathy for the subtleties of quality especially in a day and age where we increasingly appreciate the value of the artisan and locality. It need not be expensive - just considered. The Carrington could be so much more - perhaps management could take a leaf out of the QT Sydney, Aesop and the fantastic work of Living Museums. I would happily help too.

For those who are not so fussed - the Carrington offers an old world experience with motel quality service in the world heritage listed Blue Mountains and here, nature does the talking and it never fails to impress! I

Room Tip: The front rooms have a great view. For those on a budget, the traditional rooms have shared bathrooms but they are almost a museum experience - lovely old claw foot baths and tiles with decent hot water. Rooms on the South side also have great views over Katoomba.

This delightful old hotel has been refurbished with a gentle touch to leave it still with its flavour of a heritage hotel. Air-conditioning is only available in some rooms so choose carefully in very hot times. However, we stayed in January in a premier spa room without aircon and the large, high rooms were perfectly comfortable.

The staff were super, cheerful and helpful. The continental breakfast was good. The position at the top of Katoomba Street is great with plenty of eateries close by. Being a "town" location does tend to restrict the extent of the views offered, and you need to check whether the room you are booking has any view at all.
