“Don't believe the critics!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2013

Do not believe the negative comments from people who are too critical of anything other than perfection. The hotel is an older style retro hotel, but has been very tastefully refurbished, giving it a wonderful old style charm, while still being very comfortable. There are still improvements that could be made, but I am sure that over time they will come as it is a "work in progress"! My wife and I stayed in a Deluxe double room for two nights, and found it to be an extremely pleasant experience. The receptionist was extremely helpful with any advice that we sought, the room was very clean and tidy, and was at least as big as the majority of normal motel rooms. The room air conditioning worked effectively, and we found the bed to be just to our liking. We enjoyed breakfast in the Hotel dining room each morning, and found it to be very adequate and at least comparable in price to most cafes/restaurants in the main street. The hotel is very close to the central business district, and all usual amenities. Contrary to some reports Wifi is available in lounge areas at a small cost - extension of this service to all rooms in today's world would be desirable.

We stayed here in Jan 2013 and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is really well looked after and the staff are great! Very helpful and friendly! (Also very Funny!) Good sized rooms and a spa room too!

Quaint hotel, old fashioned with English charm.Period places are not shiny and new but weathered with history, this hotel is becoming a part of Australian heritage and although needs some upkeep was clean and comfortable

Room Tip: very close to the scenic skyway,a great stop of to see the blue mountains

Maybe our expectations were too high but I don't think so. Even though the room we were in looked as though it was recently painted (you could see the roller marks), the color is an old fashioned peachy shade and the wardrobe and cupboard are cheap and old looking (handle missing off cupboard housing bar fridge). The bathroom is adequate but small with a shower over a bath. For the two days we were there, large laundry bags were left uncollected in our hallway and also in the other small front entrance/exit. Room opposite had room service early on the first evening and when we left for dinner their tray was outside their door. Nothing wrong with that but it was still there early afternoon of the next day. Nice big lounge in lobby but no bar or cafe up there to get a coffee or drink. Breakfast was adequate but that was all. The most positive thing I can say about the Palais Royale is that the rooms are spotless!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to review the Palais Royale. Our new management team is addressing our weaknesses in order to provide a better standard for our guests.
I apologise that your impression of the Palais Royale was a negative one.
Our rooms are indeed a peachy color and were painted 16 years ago as part of its restoration. To hear you say they look newly painted is a compliment to the painter who painted them. The cupboards are also the originals, we have recently had the handles replaced as there were some missing. We do not offer room service at The Palais Royale so I am unsure as to why there would be a tray outside a room and also why our staff would not have picked this up after servicing or cleaning the room. Staff take pride in providing a personal, friendly and professional service to all our guests and these matters have been brought to managements attention. We have recently opened a bar in our Gold Lounge and will have coffee available in the next few weeks. We are pleased to hear that on a positive note your were impressed with the cleanliness of our rooms.

Once again thank you for your feedback.

The hotel was obviously a grand building in its time but is in need of a little TLC. The lounge areas are lovely and a great place to have a quiet drink at night or to read the paper during the day, though there is not much privacy. The room was a good size with a comfortable bed and adequate bathroom. The spa and sauna were a welcome distraction when the weather turned. The breakfast was buffet style with a little variety and more than adequate, if a little mass produced. Staff were friendly and the location was within walking distance of the main shops in Katoomba and a good walk to Echo Point or a 5 mins short drive.

It's fairly sad when a hotel you remember from years ago is, on a nostalgic return, completely below par. Initial impressions were good- the outside was the same, a bit more worn but fair enough after all these years. The lobby areas were also good but starting to give the impression of a cheap makeover of this one time classic. The rooms confirmed that feeling with cheap reproduction furniture in a king room(?) about 3 or 4 by 5 metres and a large bare bathroom with inadequate ventilation ( a sign in the bathroom warns you of this). The room was comfortable but bare with one small picture above the bed so it was not cosy. Worst was the buffet breakfast a total ripoff at $15 each. The entire choice was 2 sorts of juice, bread, cold badly cooked poached eggs, soggy bacon, dead sausages and sloppy baked beans plus undrinkable coffee or tea in a huge empty cheap makeover of a once beautiful, but now ugly, dining room. There's plenty of choice nearby in town so if you insist on paying too much to go to this hotel eat elsewhere. On the plus side the location is good but note that during the week for a little more you can go to several other close by hotels which give great location, food and service.

The hotel has a charming exterior and lovely common rooms that express the building past. The deluxe king room we stayed in was adequate with a reasonably comfortable bed, good amount of room and good shower in a smallish bathroom. The hotel, however, is starting to look tired and could do with freshen up. There was peeling paint in the bathroom and the carpets were looking a little soiled. The TV had very poor reception on the local channels and there was no pay TV on the menu. There was a sheer curtain missing from one of the windows which meant that you had to leave the drapes closed for privacy.
In the morning when we went to make a cup of tea there was only one tea bag and no milk in the fridge which no disaster but shows a lack of attention to detail.
Overall if I could give the hotel 2 and a half stars I would but I will give 3 because of the very friendly and helpful staff.
