“Needs a bit of TLC”
Reviewed 25 August 2013 via mobile

Stayed recently at the Palais Royale which is trying its best to keep up with the other more glamorous establishments in Katoomba. Please don't get me wrong, the room as spotless & clean, the bed was comfortable & the shower lovely and hot.The weekend we stayed was extremely windy & the windows rattled constantly. The windows all need fixing & new paint work is desperately needed. The lounge rooms are exceptional but the rising damp is a real problem in other parts of the guesthouse. The breakfast was tasty enough & plentiful. As we bought this on a voucher we would in no way have paid the full asking rate per night. All in all this review is only trying to improve this guesthouse's standing.

Dear Greg,

Thank you for taking the time to Review The Palais Royale. Yes we are indeed one of the few hotels in Katoomba with a grand History, each offering their own individual atmosphere-some modern some heritage. Paint work and replacement of old wood in windows has already been scheduled in as part of our room and building upgrade to be completed by the end of the year. We are pleased that you enjoyed other aspects of the hotel such as the room, bed and shower and also our breakfast buffet.

Staff and new management appreciate your feedback as it brings us one step closer to providing the high standard that we are reaching for.

I was very disappointed to find that the log fire places were not the real wood fire that I expected but a gas log fire.I had especially chosen this place for this reason, envisioning sitting by the fire sipping wine of an evening, so was very disappointed! The room was comfortable despite windows which rattled with the wind (which I chocked with paper) and some peeling paint in the bathroom ceiling. It was still an enjoyable stay as we really appreciate old buildings.
We had bought a discounted voucher for our stay so we were happy with what we found, but had we paid full price I'm not sure.

Dear Guest ,

Thank you for taking the time to review The Palais Royale. We appreciate the feedback as it allows us to improve what we can offer to our guests.
Our hotel does have 2 gas fire places yes, these were installed as part of the amazing restoration 16 years ago and is to create a warm atmosphere for guests wishing to enjoy a relaxed evening in our Gold Lounge. I apologise that the impression you were given was that our fireplaces are wooden. Our building is a heritage building and we unfortunately do have old windows . We have been working on minimizing the droughts so our guests are comfortable and cosy during their stay. We are also in the process of having the paint work touched up.
We appreciate your feedback as it allows us to improve in area's that need improving and revive the hotel to its true form.

We have been travelling to Katoomba for 16 years and have stayed at Palais Royale for the last 5 consecutive years. The new Management, Ron in particular, was so welcoming and also professional. The room was spotlessly clean, the beds soft and comfortable and the service of all the staff is exceptional! Being a historical building the upkeep of the property has been well maintained and this should also be a credit to Management. We had a steaming hot delicious full breakfast and beautiful coffee by the fire every morning of our stay. The service and attention to detail surpasses many other establishments in the area and we can't wait to return again next year! Thank you Ron and all the lovely staff at Palais Royale Katoomba. See you again soon!

The location is close to the main shopping area, and walking to some of the local tourist spots is possible if you are very fit and prepared for the hilly streets. The building has been well restored but cold draughts come through some windows. Expected crackling log fires in the middle of winter, was disappointed only one fireplace in 3 lounge areas which is now gas lit and only on minimal flame. We felt that the creaky floor boards added to the heritage atmosphere. Executive King suite was advertised to be larger room, other rooms must be absolutely tiny if this is what they call larger. Minimal, almost stingy, supply of provided soap, toilet paper, shampoo and conditioner compared to any other hotel/motel. Front desk staff seemed to change daily, some were very friendly, some were ignorant. Restaurant is closed for lunch and only serves dinner on Friday & Saturdays nights. Our breakfast was included but "hot" food was served barely warm and didn't meet the national health standards for serving hot food. Plenty of open car parking spaces.

Room Tip: If you have trouble with climbing stairs ask for a ground floor room.

Our Gold Lounge do have a gas fire place yes, this was installed as part of the amazing restoration 16 years ago and is more to create a warm atmosphere to guests wishing to enjoy an evening in our Gold Lounge. We do have a second gas fireplace downstairs in our dining room with a large flame creating the same atmosphere as a wooden fireplace. Our staff aim to provide a professional and friendly service to our guests, we have 2 reception staff on daily, it seems you may have stayed and had 1 check you in and then have the following day off this would mean you saw all 3 staff members, I apologies that you were left with the impression that some were ignorant.

1 - There was a bad vibe from the beginning of our stay, everywhere we walked we could hear the floor creaking which was spooky and made us feel like we were staying in a haunted house instead of a supposedly four and a half star Hotel. In my opinion it should only be 3 stars.

2 - Room looked basic for a four and a half star hotel.

3 - Room had stain marks on the carpet.

4 - One of the lights in the bathroom was broken and the lighting in the bedroom was dim.

5 - There were missing door handles on the wardrobe and cupboard that had the mini bar fridge inside.

6 - The majority of the lighting in the hallways was turned off at night from around 7pm onwards and kept on during the day.

7 - Housekeeping signs were not found in our room behind the doorknob and when we asked about it at reception, no action to resolve the matter was done the first and the second time.

8 - One reception staff in particular was rude when we asked about the housekeeping signs.

9 - Their official website states that check out time is midday but on the day of arrival we were told that check out is 10am.

10 - Their official website room booking page also did not include an option to have breakfast included in the package so when we booked our room we assumed that breakfast was included in the price which the website states that breakfast buffet is complimentary. When we checked in we were told that breakfast was not included in the price that we had already paid for the room and was told to pay more money to cover breakfast. This upset us because we felt that their official website had mislead us.

11 - The front of the hotel needs a paint job.

Thank you for your constructive review after your stay at our Hotel.
1. We apologise for any first impressions you may have encountered upon your entry to The Palais Royale. The heritage building is 100 years old and certain aspects such as the floor boards are still intact after the restoration. There are indeed areas of the building that do have creaky floor boards which are to be expected for a building of its age. Guests have said that it creates the atmosphere and brings out the old charm and history of the building.
2. Without knowing the room that you stayed in, I cannot comment on how “basic” it was. The Palais Royale does have 4 room types available for couples ranging from Deluxe Queen to our Royale Suite. Each with the same basic comforts of New LED TVs, Bar Fridge, Tea and Coffee Facilities ensuite and our Royale Suite having a lounge and spa. We offer different styles of rooms as many Hotels do.
3. We do have some rooms with stains and markings that did not lift when the floors were steam cleaned last month; these rooms have been booked in to have the carpet replaced in the next 6 months.
4. I apologise that there was a broken light in your bathroom, bulbs are unpredictable. Reception would have been more than happy to replace the bulb for you.
5. I also apologise for the missing door handles. They have been ordered to be replaced as part of our room upgrades and the new ones should arrive mid August.
6. I am unsure as to your comment regarding our lighting in our hallways being turned off after 7:00pm. Darkness falls at 5:30pm so I cannot understand why our lights would have been off. Our lights do get turned off from 12:00pm for the comfort of our guests but are definitely turned back on at 7:00am.
7. I apologise that you were missing a do not disturb sign and that after asking reception twice you were still unable to obtain one.
8. I also apologise that you had an unpleasant experience with a member of our reception staff. Our staff aim to provide a professional and friendly service to guests, and I have taken this matter up with management.
9. I am unsure as to your comment regarding our official website stating check out time is 12:00. We do have packages available on our website that do offer a midday checkout and these are mentioned in each package. The hotels standard check out time is 10:00am unless on a specific package, or if reception has been notified prior.
10. Again I am also unsure as to your comment regarding our website and breakfast. We do have packages that specifically state that breakfast is included; we also have packages where it is room only so breakfast is not stated in the inclusions.
11. The building was last restored in 1997 and re opened in 1999. The paintwork has held up extremely well considering it has been 16 years and does still look good. We are under new management and restoring the outside “paint job” is in our future plans however we are currently working towards the important things inside to help provide our guests with the comforts and high standard they deserve.

Thank you again for reviewing the Palais Royale. The current new management is addressing our weaknesses in order to provide a better standard for the guests. We appreciate your constructive criticism as it helps us get closer to providing the high standard that we are reaching for.

Room was fine - nothing exceptional, we did appreciate the heating that was turned on for our return later at night (cold winter night in July). Lounge rooms and dining room areas lovely with beautiful stained glass and character. Our stay included a full hot breakfast which was very good.

good value for a family of 4. large room with two queen size beds. spacious and very clean bathroom. beautiful lounge area with federation charm. a lovely experience.

the owners were very nice and extremely helpful. a credit to them for looking after their customers.

only mistake was booking through booking.com instead of dealing directly with the hotel. they screwed us an extra $30.
