Description: Set in the historic Savoy picture theatre building, AVALON Restaurant and Bar at Katoomba combines playful art-deco charm with hearty food, friendly service and spectacular Blue Mountains views. Located on main street Katoomba, enter the historic Savoy picture theatre foyer and make your way past the ticket booth and up the stairs. The restaurant inhabits the dress circle of the old theatre, and offers a decor of quirky retro finds and spectacular mountain views over Leura and the Jamison Valley. Meals are prepared in the old projection room, and cocktails and retro tunes are served in the former refreshment lounge, now a cosy bar complete with roaring fireplace. The art deco architecture is complemented by an eclectic collection of furnishings and artwork. The style of service is casual and friendly. Licensed and BYO wine.

Came here last night for dinner. The decor is quirky and kitsch but that is as good as it gets.
Ordered the lamb and chicken fillets. It was impossible to determine the quality as both were drowned in terrible overpowering sauce.
Presentation was poor reflecting something that you might get in an average pub.
Would not recommend this restaurant.

The foods ok, not very good.
Huge portions that arent particularly well cooked or seasoned.
The decor is pretty cool and interesting but it doesnt make up for the not so wonderful food.
Its all a bit average and over priced.. the locals dont eat here

“Lovely quirky restaurant in Katoomba”

we had a lovely dinner there last Saturday evening. We had no booking, and the staff made us welcome in the bar. Luckily for us a table became available in the restaurant itself. It was a treat to eat there!

“The 'quirky" reviews hit the nail on the head.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2014

This place is definitely different! The doll heads in glass bowls in the bar, the 50s era clothing the servers wear, to not anything matching in the restaurant give it the full eclectic setting.

The food was good, we had spring rolls and a fresh fig dish that were very good. We found the BYOB a cool deal and judging buy the people around us, they knew about it so I am assuming it had a solid following of locals who brought their own wine for dinner.

The bar was a little scarce for liquor selections so definitely bring your own wine if you are picky about drinks. Also the service was a little scattered but nothing earth shattering.

Give it a shot you will be checking everything out throughout your meal and still catching weird things as you leave.
