Description: Set in the historic Savoy picture theatre building, Avalon Restaurant & Cocktail Bar at Katoomba combines playful art-deco charm with hearty food, friendly service and spectacular Blue Mountains views. Located on main street Katoomba, enter the historic Savoy picture theatre foyer and make your way past the ticket booth and up the stairs. The restaurant inhabits the dress circle of the old theatre, and offers a decor of quirky retro finds and spectacular mountain views over Leura and the Jamison Valley. Meals are prepared in the old projection room, and cocktails and retro tunes are served in the former refreshment lounge, now a cosy bar complete with roaring fireplace. The art deco architecture is complemented by an eclectic collection of furnishings and artwork. The style of service is casual and friendly. Licensed and BYO wine.

My friend who knows the Blue Mountains well chose this restaurant for a Sunday lunch. It is on the second floor of an old movie theater. It has a big picture window with a beautiful view, so try to sit near the window. The decorations are very eclectic, as is the staff. Yet, the dining room is very warm and comfortable and the food is also good and very reasonably priced.

During a two night stay at the Blue Mountains we had dinner at the Avalon restaurant which is situated at the top end of Katoomba street and the upstairs of an old cinema. The decor is like stepping into your favourite eccentric aunties place. The waiting staff were also dressed to suit the theme of the place. The food was full of flavour and filling. Worth a look.

Popular with tourists and locals - you should book. The view and setting is unique offering the Jamison Valley in its fullest glory.

We chose this place as it had a point of difference to other restaurants being housed in a former cinema and we loved the charm and quirkiness of the place. We didn’t seem to have the same waiter twice, every time someone came to the table it was someone different. All very pleasant enough. On a Sunday night, the restaurant was half full but we waited too long for our main course. We skipped entree and went straight to mains as we were hungry from our bush walking, but if we’d known we’d be waiting close to an hour, we would’ve chosen elsewhere. Fortunately, when it did arrive it was tasty, delicious and we ate everything on the plate.
Dessert came soon after, when we could’ve done with a break, it too was delicious but couldn’t eat all of it. Will be trying other places next time, we visit the Blue Mountains.

I've been a patron of this restaurant for about 25 years. It's a preferred venue for birthday parties and special occasions for many friends and family. As many reviewers quite reasonably state, the decor, ambience and view is very pleasant. However, after a long run of fairly average experiences here I am disappointed that the former owners who still operate this restaurant have not learned how to read their dining room and patrons comfort. The Friday night supper club was on when we attended. This simply means that your dinner conversation will be drowned out by a talented young solo guitarist. As a result everyone in the restaurant has to yell at each other! To add to the pain, the table service can be best described as ignorant. As we were a larger table, the kitchen initially refused to serve us the house favourite steaks. The long suffering waitress had to go an negotiate with the cook (not a chef!) who relented and agreed to take a maximum of 8 steak orders. The food quality here has always been acceptable, however it is unimaginative and the menu hasn't changed much in 25 years. The wine list and cocktail bar is good, albeit a bit expensive for table wine choices.
This restaurant has never suffered from a lack of patronage, but it does suffer from a lack of experienced management and staff. It's time that they stopped worrying about the decor and promoting themed evenings, and instead concerned themselves with getting the fundamental elements of running a restaurant sorted ... food, drink and service!
