The dirt road down Mt Hay rd can be a little rough but still okay for non 4wd's like my sedan.
The walk is not ardous from having to deal with really steep inclines but can take some time 90 mins plus so remember drinking water etc and mobile phone covergare still very good so that is a blessing.
You walk along Fortress Ridge through various scrub and bushes and eventually start to get glimpses of deep gorges and valleys in the middle distance that surprise you on first sighting.
The path gets a little covered in parts and there is a split where we took the wrong direction on the way back and had to back track to get on the right path and back to our car.
In retrospect, we should have taken the obvious much wider clear path but were in good spirits and talking too much and not paying attention.
All in all a very satisfying walk. make sure you use suncreeen take hats etc if a sunny day, not too hard to get burnt.

“Stunning walk amid wildflowers”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2011

This is a reasonably easy walk - about 1.5km each way. Most walks in the Blue Mountains involve a serious uphill slog on the return trip, but Fortress Rock spares you that exhaustion.

There is a short slope right at the beginning of the walk and the rest is along a ridge to a rather impressive view.

We walked in mid October and the wildflowers were quite wonderful. The flannel flowers were not out but would be worth doing the walk again when they were.

The start of the walk is in the National Park about 8km along Mt Hay Road, north of Leura. There is a sign to Fortress Rock on the left and parking near a gate across a fire trail.

We used Blue Mountains Best Bushwalks Edition 2 - page 102. Doubtless you can get a trail map in the National Park Office.
