There are, to my knowledge, at least four Chinese restaurants in this seaside and high-touristy town, but the Ulladulla Chinese (on the corner of South Street and the Princes Highway) far surpasses the others. Why? Well, for starters, and somewhat to my surprise, all of the front-of-office staff are non-Chinese. In fact, they're locals, all Caucasians, hence they know most of the local clientele and treat them as the friends and neighbours they are. Secondly, it's the biggest such restaurant in Ulladulla, on two slight levels, the lower of the two, just one easy step down, being closer to the harbour and those spectacular but distant harbour and ocean views. [If there are only the two of you, ask for Table 5, nearest the panoramic windows with all those views]. The third reason is that the prices may be slightly more than you'd pay in Sydney ($7.50 for a small vegetarian fried rice, $8.50 for a large; $18.50 for most of the standard Chinese cuisine meals) but they are catering to country appetites and the servings are far more than their city cousins can digest, so one meal will easily satisfy two. Fourth, they're BYO for bottled wine only($4.50 corkage), but their wine list is modest and modestly priced. But you go there for the ambience (those beige walls and soaring ceilings help) and the food, and that's where their staff is genuinely Chinese. The food in terms of presentation, taste and quantity can't be faulted. It's open for lunch between 1200 and 1400 Tuesday to Saturday and for dinner between 1700-2100 Tuesday to Sunday. Ample street parking, and you'll know you've reached the place when you see the tiny Domino's Pizza shop on the very corner, with the Chinese Restaurant right next door. Go there! I promise you won't be disappointed.
