“Amazing panoramic views”
Reviewed 7 April 2011

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment - room 1003 (lvl 3) which had a beautiful 160 degree panoramic view (south facing) of Bribie Island, Pumicestone passage, Bulcock Beach & the Glasshouse Mountains. Monaco's ocean facing apartments seem to be thoughtfully designed to maximize views on the balconies.

To get good ocean views, make sure you are above the 4th floor. There was an outdoor table & chairs on beautiful balcony, but it did get windy and was often wet when it rained.

The apartment was well designed, spacious & new. The kitchen was fully self contained with modern full sized whitegoods & stove/oven etc. There was a very large shower inside the combined laundry/bathroom. I was hoping for a bath/spa, which I'm sure some rooms have... though the view made up for not having this.

The common BBQ and outdoor area is spacious and this adjoins the pool. Unfortunately the heat swimming pool is long and narrow so isn't very spacious once a few people get into it. I managed to do some laps in it when there weren't others in the pool (about 20 metres in length). There is a small wading pool for children & also a small outdoor spa which is a warm temperature. The sauna room and gym are also of smallish size but useable when there aren't too many people around.

There's lots of upgrades being done to Caloundra at present, so it can be a little noisy, but this didn't bother us. The esplanade is getting a face lift but the main street is still a sleepy country town. Much less hussle and bussle compared to Noosa or Maroochydoore (or Surfers Paradise). Bulcock Beach has surf & inlet beaches, so is suitable for families, couples, kite surfers & retirees. Monaco is well situated between the esplanade & main strip of shops (20-50 metres walk either way).

There is a Coles & Woolworths shopping centre (a short drive or moderate walk) away from the beach, and smaller convenience stores closer by to pick up supplies. Otherwise there's lots of dining options along the waterfront or on the main street. We didn't try the Shingle Inn which was downstairs next to the main reception.

The room rates were extremely reasonable (but have just recently gone up) and the staff were also very helpful in honouring their original prices when we booked. Overall a very comfortable stay in a beautiful part of the world.

Room Tip: Pay extra to get a gorgeous ocean view

We booked a 1 bedroom ocean view for our 20th Anniversary. It was superb !!! Ocean views, fantastic apartment - staff were great - pool was great. Couldn't have asked for more for our special time except maybe a little less rain.

Our holiday to Caloundra was purely for pleasure to celebrate my 40th birthday. Before booking i researched just about every Hotel in Caloundra but The Monaco just kept capturing my eye so we booked for 5 nights. I prayed our room looked like the pictures advertised on the internet and on arrival we were not dissapointed so we booked for a further 2 nights. The Monaco is just beautiful, we were in a 1 bedroom apartment on the 10 floor with the most breathtaking views. Our room was state of the art with all the mod cons at our fingertips. The balcony was huge which really impressed us as this is where we spend most our our time. The beach, shops, cafes, pub and Restaurants were just a hop , skip and jump away. What impressed us was the security of the Monaco. The pool, games room, gym and BBQ area was also just something else. We would not hesitate to stay at the monaco again as the price we paid to stay was also another draw card. The only negative i have, ( which i must say is only my personal opinion as i like a really firm mattress) was the bed, i just found it was a bit bouncy and soft, for me only. But hey, that's nothing when everything else about the Monaco was absolutely perfect.

We recently stayed at Monaco in Caloundra and would definitely go back there again. The 3 bedroom penthouse that we stayed in on the 11th floor was superb and the view from our room was grand - and with a room rate that was very reasonable!!! The pool was heated so swimming was a hit with our kids. Its location is ideal as everything from the beach to restaurants/cafes and shopping within a short stroll. The staff were very friendly and only too happy to help accomodate us. Australia Zoo, Underwater World and Aussie World were within a 20 minute drive which was perfect for our family.

If you are a couple or only staying a day or two, you'd probably love Monaco. We were disappointed with it.

All the publicity pics of Monaco show the view (i.e. ocean AND passage) from the higher/highest levels. We were allocated an apartment on a low level. We had a great view of the Grand Pacific Resort's wall in front of us and a view of the passage to the side. You can not book a specific apartment through the central reservations and for this reason alone, we would not go back. We like to know what we are getting and be able to make a choice about whether we think looking into a wall is worth $2000 for a week.

The pool heating wasn't working and according to permanent residents, hadn't been for some time. We reported this to Reception, twice, and both times they said they'd logged it. I suggested they might like to follow it up???? I didn't hear back.

The pool is a lap type design and not very wide. When 20-30 people are in it as you could expect on a day over New Year when the weather is warm (on the overcast days it was too cold to use - see above about heating or lack thereof - and was empty), it was too tiny for the quantity of units it was supposed to service. Particularly when not so petite families who all seemed to be holidaying together were encouraging their children to bomb dive poor unsuspecting fellow guests.

The two bed unit we were in had a sofa bed but there are no curtains (only sheer drapes) in the lounge so the moment it becomes light, think 4.30am, sleep is impossible. There are also no blinds/drapes on the entry windows so light shines through them too.

The dining furniture was white and it was over carpeted floor. Think completely impractical for use by young children.

The washer was a front loader and only had 6kg capacity so it fitted 4 towels in it before it was 'full'. One day I did 4 loads of laundry because of its tiny capacity. That is not how I expected to spend my 'holiday'.

Internet is only available at a purchase cost of $50 for a few days. I've stayed in three star motels at $65 a night that provide internet as standard. Monaco could learn from that.

My husband who never gets bitten by mosquitoes or sandflies or the like came up in a field of bites whilst we were at Monaco and upon reading a previous review (November) we see someone else experienced flea/midge problems. We now wonder if that is what he suffered? Whatever it was, it is very unusual for him to be affected by insects.

We eventually decided enough was enough and left early. Monaco looks nice but we didn't find it at all practical for our family. We won't be back.

Dear mssell,
I would like to thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review and am sorry to hear that you won’t be visiting Monaco again.
Monaco is aimed at couples and small and large families alike and we have room types to suit all. The furniture, whitegoods and fittings are of a luxury standard and design and I’m sorry to hear you were unable to be impressed this time. Front loader washing machines are also now a statutory requirement in new units on the Sunshine Coast. As per our advertising, all rooms in our letting pool definitely offer water views; we do not have any apartments that look directly into a wall. Internet is also available from $5, the plan you mentioned above is for 1 week unlimited internet access.
We are currently awaiting a part for our pool to keep it heated to our usual 28 degrees, however it is still at a comfortable level of approx 27 degrees. Unfortunately the weather we have been experiencing at the moment can make the water feel cooler and could also be the cause of your husband’s bites. Being directly on the beach and the phenomenal amount of rain we are currently experiencing, I’m sure you would have noticed the increased amount of flying midges and insects this has stirred up.

Our apartment in Monaco was fantastic. Modern, clean and nicely decorated. The apartment building is just a 2 minute walk to the sea and the shops. The facilities in the building were also excellent. We made lots of use of the pools, spa and sauna. Would definitely stay there again.
