Kangaroo Island, with its abundant wildlife and unspoiled natural beauty is definitely worth exploring. Its vastness and the fact that the wildlife is not always right out in the open, however, make going with a tour almost a necessity in order to fully enjoy what the island offers. After our experience with KI Odysseys and our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide, Nikki, I highly recommend touring with them. KI Odysseys has access to private areas that other tours or general tourists do not, which practically guarantees you will see plenty of kangaroos, koalas, and other animals. Nikki, who has lived on Kangaroo Island all her life, knows everything there is to know about everything on Kangaroo Island and seems to have a sixth sense for finding wildlife. Her goal is for her guests to see as much wildlife and learn as much about the Island as possible. With her engaging personality and wonderful sense of humor, she does all of this in a fun way. I can definitely say you will not see or learn half as much traveling KI on your own. If you are going to spend the money it costs to join a tour, your money will be well spent going with KI Odysseys. My husband and I visited KI in late March and chose the two night option flying to KI from Adelaide, staying at the Aurora Ozone, and taking the ferry and bus back to Adelaide. This option works extremely well. KI Odysseys arranges pick-up at your hotel in Adelaide and transportation to the Adelaide airport. The flight gets you from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island in about half an hour. Touring begins immediately upon arrival and lasts until late afternoon. If you select the bus/ferry option going to KI, you must start your day in Adelaide much earlier since the bus ride takes close to two hours and the ferry ride takes nearly an hour. It would make for a very long day. The bus ride and ferry are great and definitely worth experiencing for the lovely scenery, but that option works much better on the trip back to Adelaide. After our airport pick-up in KI and gathering those who road over on the ferry, Nikki and our group of six began our adventure seeing kangaroo right away. Lunch, in a secluded bush area reserved for KI Odyssey guests, was fresh and delicious and included wine. In the afternoon we saw koalas and seals and lots of gorgeous scenery. We were dropped off at the Aurora Ozone Hotel late in the afternoon. This is a very nice property that overlooks the coast. Staying right in Kingscote offers the most dining options, but beware that dinner hours end early and some of the restaurants do not abide by their posted hours. The second day with Nikki began early and was again filled with seeing wildlife and the gorgeous scenery of Flinders Chase National Park and the Remarkable Rocks and also included a delicious lunch. We spent the night again at the Aurora Ozone and were taken to the ferry for our journey back to Adelaide early the next morning. KI Odysseys makes all the transportation and accommodation arrangements. Their planning and organization is flawless. The touring vehicle is extremely comfortable and you could not find a friendlier or more knowledgeable guide than Nikki. To fully appreciate and experience Kangaroo Island, I highly recommend KI Odysseys and doing the two night fly to/ferry back option.

I was on a P&O ship that came to Kangaroo Island for one day only so I decided to take a tour that gave me as many 'highlights' of the island as was possible in the limited time allowed. I am glad I chose the Odysseys tour. It was the slightly dearer one, but feedback from those who took the cheaper ones (not Odysseys) was less than impressive. It was great value for the money. Tailored to the cruise people, our tour guides and driver were great value as they knew everything and more about Kangaroo Island and the smaller group made it easy to get answers and made for a nice 'feel'.
Nikki is a passionate and involved talker and I was never bored by 'tourist' chatter. The tour took me from one end of the island to the other and I saw all the attractions that Kangaroo Island is rightly famous for with no 'hurry up'. A gourmet picnic lunch in the National Park was excellent. Rarely given, I give my best praise to Odysseys - unforgettably excellent.

By far the best tour we had in 2 weeks in Australia. The kangaroos, koalas, goannas, seals, sea lions...wildlife everywhere and some of the most unique and awesome scenery imagineable. It's hard to believe how one island can hold so much and our guide, Nikki, gave us a royal tour. Lunches were incredible...secluded settings and excellent food. Nikki was extremely knowledgeable, gave us informative and entertaining talks and was able to answer every question. Don't mean to gush, but it really was that good, as we told everyone we met afterwards. Two day tour we hated to end.

I was travelling with my husband, and grown up children (21 & 18). We all agreed that this 2 day trip was the highlight of our holiday. Expensive, but well worth it.
Our guides, Nikki & Mark, were both passionate about their island. And equally knowledgable about the flora & fauna.
Fabulous lunch on both days as well.
We all felt that Kangaroo Island was Austalia compressed. Too good to miss !

Hello frostydi

Thank you so much for your glowing review of our KI Odysseys tour. It’s wonderful to receive such positive feedback.

Nikki and Mark (and all of our tour guides) are so passionate about not only Kangaroo Island but the wildlife and nature that the island is renowned for. They all know the best spots to 'get off the beaten track' and give our guests the best experience possible. I completely agree – Kangaroo Island is definitely the best bits of Australia “condensed”.

I had read some rather mediocre reviews of tours on Kangaroo Island but none of those complaints could be levelled at Odysseys. Numbers will fluctuate slightly with the season, but we were in a group of just two couples being shown around the island by our guide (Nikki Redman) in a four-wheel drive. Nikki is passionate about the island and its wildlife and has a particular interest in birds and mammals, so any birders would do well to try and engage her services. The small size of our group meant that the basic pattern of the tour was tailored to our particular interests.

Periods of driving and very informative commentary were interspersed with walks, time to explore on our own at sites and ample refreshments all served up at dedicated sites by Nikki.

The tour IS expensive and, coming at the end of our holiday, we had seem many of the animals before we arrived on the tour, but for anyone less inclined to explore on their own it is an ideal way to get an intense snap-shot of Australian wildlife.
