Kangaroo Island, with its abundant wildlife and unspoiled natural beauty is definitely worth exploring. Its vastness and the fact that the wildlife is not always right out in the open, however, make going with a tour almost a necessity in order to fully enjoy what the island offers. After our experience with KI Odysseys and our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide, Nikki, I highly recommend touring with them. KI Odysseys has access to private areas that other tours or general tourists do not, which practically guarantees you will see plenty of kangaroos, koalas, and other animals. Nikki, who has lived on Kangaroo Island all her life, knows everything there is to know about everything on Kangaroo Island and seems to have a sixth sense for finding wildlife. Her goal is for her guests to see as much wildlife and learn as much about the Island as possible. With her engaging personality and wonderful sense of humor, she does all of this in a fun way. I can definitely say you will not see or learn half as much traveling KI on your own. If you are going to spend the money it costs to join a tour, your money will be well spent going with KI Odysseys. My husband and I visited KI in late March and chose the two night option flying to KI from Adelaide, staying at the Aurora Ozone, and taking the ferry and bus back to Adelaide. This option works extremely well. KI Odysseys arranges pick-up at your hotel in Adelaide and transportation to the Adelaide airport. The flight gets you from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island in about half an hour. Touring begins immediately upon arrival and lasts until late afternoon. If you select the bus/ferry option going to KI, you must start your day in Adelaide much earlier since the bus ride takes close to two hours and the ferry ride takes nearly an hour. It would make for a very long day. The bus ride and ferry are great and definitely worth experiencing for the lovely scenery, but that option works much better on the trip back to Adelaide. After our airport pick-up in KI and gathering those who road over on the ferry, Nikki and our group of six began our adventure seeing kangaroo right away. Lunch, in a secluded bush area reserved for KI Odyssey guests, was fresh and delicious and included wine. In the afternoon we saw koalas and seals and lots of gorgeous scenery. We were dropped off at the Aurora Ozone Hotel late in the afternoon. This is a very nice property that overlooks the coast. Staying right in Kingscote offers the most dining options, but beware that dinner hours end early and some of the restaurants do not abide by their posted hours. The second day with Nikki began early and was again filled with seeing wildlife and the gorgeous scenery of Flinders Chase National Park and the Remarkable Rocks and also included a delicious lunch. We spent the night again at the Aurora Ozone and were taken to the ferry for our journey back to Adelaide early the next morning. KI Odysseys makes all the transportation and accommodation arrangements. Their planning and organization is flawless. The touring vehicle is extremely comfortable and you could not find a friendlier or more knowledgeable guide than Nikki. To fully appreciate and experience Kangaroo Island, I highly recommend KI Odysseys and doing the two night fly to/ferry back option.
