We almost didn't go, but the experience was well-worth the voluntary donation to pay for fish. Incredible pelicans and lots of action. Get there by 5:30, or else!

It should be said up front, it's not free! I do agree that there should be a sign that states the cost before you sit down. The free of $5 per adult and $3 per child goes towards the stayed $40,000 fish fee per year that he needs to pay to keep the pelicans coming back each day. Whether this is true or not, I do not know but I think it was good value. The information provided was good and the feeding was fun. The opportunity for photography was well worth the money.

This pelican feeding happens every day at 5pm and apparently it's been happening for many years.

Some of the signs and brochures say it starts at 4:50pm or 4:55pm but I guess that it designed to get everyone seated by 5pm.

The location is a small area near the water's edge that consists of a timber platform and a series of timber bench seats up the hill. It is well designed to ensure that the audience is close to the action.

The presenter arrived at 5pm carrying a plastic tub full of food for the bird life. He is genuine entertainer. An Aussie gem and the real star of the show.

He seems to have the birds well trained because they fly past, land on his head or beg for food on queue. I guess he's been doing it for so long, he knows the birds really well and they know him.

As you would expect, most of the cast consists of pelicans but there are also cameo appearances from seagulls. It was a fabulous photo opportunity.

The show lasted for about twenty minutes. After the show, there is ample opportunity to take more photos down on the stage and along the shore.

As you are leaving, the presenter waits at the exit holding a pouch asking you for a contribution of $5 for the performance to ensure that he can continue with the daily event. It was well worthwhile. In fact, I felt guilty leaving only $5 for each of us because the experience was worth much more than this.

If you are in Kingscote, you must make the pelican feeding part of your day. Don't miss it.

For a $5 fee per person, you get an educational talk about the pelicans, the chance to see masses of the wee beasties up close and personal, and a front row seat to a feeding frenzy unlike any I have seen before. I must have taken hundreds of photos, and this will definitely be remembered as a highlight. I believe it is one of the best value for money things to do on the island. Highly recommended.

Awesome. Just rug up and go do it. Cheap, entertaining and fantastic photo ops :-)

We loved it!

Hard to figure out whereabouts on the jetty it's done, so keep an eye out on where all the birds are circling and landing to help find the spot ;-)
