Aurora Ozone Hotel
Ranked #3 of 5 Hotels in Kingscote
Reviewed 27 March 2008

We just stayed one night during our 2 day self drive tour of KI.

The hotel is maybe a little old fashioned but perfectly acceptable.
We had a 'Superior' room with ocean view, but there was a road (albeit quiet) between our room and the beach.

We ate in the restaurant, after wandering aroung Kingscote and finding very little alternative.

The receptionist was helpful, but when we paid our bill it was automatically converted to Sterling when we prefer to pay in the local currency as we have a good deal for using our card abroad ((Nationwide). This conversion cost us more than had we paid in Aus $. She said the machine automatically converted and could not be changed. The cost was probably only a few pounds, but just slightly annoying.

Overall though the hotel was fine, and we would probably stay here again.

This hotel was booked for us by our relatives so we did not know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed our stay. The rooms were pretty standard...and a little old fashioned..but we were comfortable, had our own fridge and a serviceable bathroom. Fresh milk and cookies were supplied every day so we could make our own coffee and tea.
The hotel directly faces the sea as the name suggests and is near the Kingscote Pier where there is a small and quirky aquarium with some wonderful seahorses. Just off the pier, the aquarium owner feeds pelicans every afternoon at 5pm and you can watch for free while he gives a lecture about the birds. In the evening he organizes walks along the beach to view the Little or Fairy Penguin.
The staff at the hotel are pleasant, their is a nice lounge overlooking the sea, and the restaurant is marvellous. Every evening they do a roast of the day served buffet style for such a reasonable price, you can't turn it down. There are some wonderful a la carte items available as well. The buffet breakfast is also reasonably priced and delicious.
kangaroo Island is very rural and mostly National Park so there are no ritzy developments here....just a wonderful opportunity to see wildlife and some fabulous scenery.

We stayed here as part of an APT tour of Kangaroo Island, and I have to say it was the low point of our tour. The hotel is in two parts across the road from each other, and they couldn't contrast more. There's a historic, but VERY shabby, hotel on one side, and a very, very new modern part on the other side. We were put in the modern part, and our room seemed to be so new that we may well have been the first people to stay there. Which might explain why it was so completely and utterly soul-less. A plasma TV seems unnecessary after a few days looking at the spectacular scenery and wildlife of Kangaroo Island.

We checked in behind a European couple and thought the proprietor was being so patronising to them because he presumed their English was poor. Until he was equally patronising to us, intoning the same spiel word-perfect. He directed us to the hotel restaurant across the road for lunch and for dinner. We'd been forewarned not to have dinner there, and ventured out to find Restaurant Bella - a great place for pizzas, oysters and a whole range of bistro-style food. Breakfast at the Ozone restaurant was a disgrace - totally over priced and the food was appalling. A real disappointment of the trip. Moreover, the tables were crowded with "keno" lottery cards. Anyone with a gambling problem might have found that rather daunting at 7 am on a weekday. To us it was just annoying - Kingscote ain't Vegas.

I'm relieved we were only there for a night. Every trip has to have it's low points, and this was ours.

This is a very old hotel, all rooms upstairs, no elevators. Many have an ocean view but our view was blocked by large trees in front. The floor in the room creaked when we walked around and the rooms are near shabby, but to be expected in an old establishment. Our travel agent assured us it was a first class booking, but I would have to see some other hotels before believing that. It's all relative, i suppose. The restaurant had lots of good food at fair prices as lnng as you don't order seafood (seafood is precious all over Australia). We went to KI to see the wild life, was not disappointed in the roos, koalas, but the penguins were another matter. They were limited in number, only viewable at night, precluding most of us getting any decent photos. The night tour was educational and we saw some penguin behavior not normally seen, but again, no photos came out. If you want to see a penguin parade, better to go to Philip Island, I think, overall.

It is also expensive to visit KI. The 4 days in Adelaide/KI cost us as much as the rest of our 2 week trip put together. Plane fare (a 15 minute flight) was $300 U.S. per person and extreme limitations on luggage. unless you want to pay $2 per KG for all luggage over 20 KG per person EACH WAY. We stored our excess luggage at the Adelaide Airport after REX Air rep assured us it would be on the carousel when we came back thru on our way to Sydney. We almost missed our Sydney flignt connection because it took them so long to get our luggage out of storage and to right place and our bags arrived a day behind us due to late checkin.

We took the Kangaroo Island Wilderness tours with a driver and 4WD vehicle. The driver was great, but the vehicle is a Nissan SUV and not very comfortable. They also tend to crowd people into them at times. We had up to 6 adults stuffed into ours one day, a very bad ride for the unlucky folks in the little third seat. It didn't take long before we started to envy the lucky folks that were on large comfortable tour busses.

We loved Kangaroo Island overall and the Ozone fit in beautifully with that experience. Most rooms have an ocean view, it's clean and modern and the staff is friendly. The food is also pretty good, which is a good thing since there aren't very many alternatives. It is right in the village so you can look through the shops by foot and meet the penguin tour just steps from the hotel (it's not nearly as spectacular as the Phillip Island one though) and you can also watch the pelican feedings in the same spot.

Budget room is a very small room, with a small bed (full-size mattress) and small bath. Functional, but small. Great water pressure in shower.

Food in the restaurant is decent. Not great, but not bad either.

Room smelled smokey both nights we were there (room 36). Individual air conditioner in the room helped, but uncomfortable.

Friday night a small bar/club near the hotel plays music really loud until ~ 2AM...hard to sleep.

Minifridge in room (stocked with cold drinking water). Close to where the penguins come out at night.
