“Perfect spot to explore Kangaroo Island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2010

Kangaroo Island is 150 km long and is a Driver's paradise so it doesn't matter where you stay. The Ozone is in the main settlement and has wonderful views and great rooms. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment (kids 9 & 13) and had a great time. Hotel bistro has fresh seafood and great local wines. We will be going back.

When we booked the only room they had left was an executive room at a slightly higher price which we were delighted with as it was immaculate and beautifully furnished with a flat screen tv.Great shower room/bathroom
We stayed for 3 days and were delighted with the service except for a few minor annoyances such as breakfast on Sunday finished at 9.30am and in our room ( no 264) we got a distinct odour from the dustbins in the entrance to the hotel from the car park. The restaurant food was very good and the area Kingscote is a very good base to see the little penquins and the feeding of the penicans.Lovely staff and pleasant relaxed stay

Great location. Our room was adaquate but clean. We stayed 2 nights and dined at the hotel restaurant both nights. We thought the food was very good and reasonably priced. The only issue with the restaurant was it is home to many tour groups, so individual guests may have trouble getting a table in your timeframe without a prior reservation. The internet setup is poor. There is one computer in the lobby which is paid by the minute and is expensive and slow. Not worth the effort and cost.

The whole point of going to Kangaroo Island is to see the wildlife so you can't expect top-class hotel accomodation. That would somewhat spoil the ambience about the place anyway.

The Aurora Ozone serves the purpose of giving you somewhere to stay between your day trips. OK, the rooms are a bit dated and the stairs and corridor could do with updating but the view from my room at the front was worth putting up with that. Not much choice on the TV but I didn't need that anyway, just glad to get a good night's sleep.

I made friends with a couple of ladies from our tour and we dined in the hotel 'restaurant' and we enjoyed the food well enough.

Not much to see in Kingscote so don't go for the nightlife !!

The wife and I took a trip to KI in mid October 2009, and this was the only hotel that was available that: 1. was in our price range, 2. was in the heart of town, 3. had available rooms.

I had the pleasure (?) of staying in both the new apartments and the older rooms, as I could not get one of the older rooms for the duration of my trip.

The new apartments over the road, are really nice. They are new, and well appointed, and you have your own private, internal garage with lock-up gate. The room smelled a bit musty, and the bathroom smelled like it was backed up a little, but once we aired out the room properly, then we had no complaints. The microwave in the room was great for heating up frozen meals, as your restaurant choices are a bit limited. To summarise, the apartments are really nice, but expensive (about AU$220 a night),

We then moved over to the older hotel for our remaining 2 nights. This room was a bit dated, but still, it was clean, did not smell musty, and the bathroom was quite nice as it had heaters and extractor fans. I would have preferred bottled toiletries, but instead, the shampoo, soap, etc were in dispensers on the wall. I think this gave the room/hotel a very cheap, 2-star feel. (the apartments had proper toiletries.) Overall, no major complaints about this room. There was an ok TV, and we had a view of the ocean.

The location was perfect for us, as it was a 1 minute walk to where the penguins were, where there was pelican feeding, and where we picked up the marine tour (Kingscote wharf). Also, it was close to a supermarket, a petrol station, a few stores and a few restaurants, all within 2 minutes walk. 5/5 for location! A bit pricey for what you get though (about AU$160 a night.)

Regarding the service, well, the one thing we actually needed service from them for, is the one thing they failed miserably on. We booked a full-day tour prior to coming to KI, and the tour company called the hotel and left a message for us regarding the pick-up time. But, we never got the message. The guide came whilst we were having breakfast and had to leave since he had other clients to pick up. Crisis was averted when the tour company offered us alternative transport.

From what I hear, all hotels are really expensive on KI. In terms of development, Kingscote is probably as good as it gets on KI. Therefore, with respect to what is available on KI, then this is a good hotel to stay in: hence the 4-star overall rating that I gave it. Compared to other hotels you stayed in in cities around the world, well, of course it cannot compare - however, you should not compare as that would be comparing chalk and cheese.

PS* on a side note, I wanted to mention some tour operators, as they were fantastic, and I highly highly recommend them!
1. KI Marine Tours - see wild dolphins and swim with them
2. KI Transfers - took us on a great nocturnal tour, saw kangaroos, wallabies, possums and a koala. Great local midnight snacks in the bush.
3. Exceptional Kangaroo Island - excellent, 5-star full day tour with BBQ

Apart from being in a great location this place is just nasty. The decor and especially the food/restaurant are simply just nasty. Kangaroo Island has wonderful nature but the food there is not nearly what its cracked up to be as there is not a single decent restaurant on the Island

Kangaroo Island is an absolute must, if you are making the long trip down to Australia. This hotel, though good enough, doesn't really fit in with the vibe on the island. If I were to go back, I would stay in a more personal property, perhaps one of the many B&Bs. That said, this hotel served its purpose well. We stayed in one of the Upper Floor One Bedroom Apartments. It had a sort of prefab feel, but was very spacious, new and extremely clean. The bathroom had a separate tub and shower and one sink. Though we did not use it, the kitchen had all the utensils etc. you might need to prepare a meal. We had a nice view to the sea and parking was easy on the street.

The restaurant at the hotel, though not much to look at, is suprisingly good. Kingscote isn't beautiful, but it feels quaint and is very convenient place to stay when visiting the island. For someone looking for an easy stay on a beautiful island, you could do much worse than the Ozone.

As an aside, we did a full day tour with Exceptional Kangaroo Island tours and it was absolutely fantastic. We highly recommend this operator.
