At dusk the campsite comes alive with kangaroos, wallabies, possums and, if you're lucky, koalas - all right outside your tent or cabin door. In a tent, the wallabies can keep you awake at night with their thumping around though! In the morning you're greeted by a group of Gallahs. The wildlife and the setting are great - the tent sight overlooks endless fields. There are some cool design touches such as the payphone in an old bakery van but the other facilities could be cared for better. The kitchen - especially the fridge - needs a good clean and is cramped. And the toilet/showers, although modern, are limited in numbers (expect to queue) and are often muddy. The staff appear to be a bunch of laid back backpackers who can't be bothered to go that extra mile. But these criticisms are a small price to pay for an amazing location and a chance to see all that fabulous Aussie wildlife going about it's business just steps from your front door.

So we drove to Flinders Chase Natl park hoping to find a place to stay in the area. We weren't having much luck unless we wanted to spend $$$$ to stay at KI Wilderness retreat. We stopped off at the Western KI caravan park hoping that we get lucky.

I instantly liked the layout of the park and the grounds. The attractive log cabins and campgrounds looked well kept. Unfortunately, when we inquire about a room they didn't have anything available for a 2 night stay. But wait there happened to be a brand new cabin that they were just putting on the finishing touches. So if we didn't mind not having a TV we could be the first ones to occupy it. Otherwise, everything else was pretty much done.

The unit was self-contained and came with A/C, ceiling fans, working bathroom, stove/oven, microwave, pots/pans, etc. Needless to say everything was immaculate like it was all brand new. ;) So I am a little bias here.

There are no restaurants nearby so having the kitchen was essential. (The closest restaurant was the cafe in the park which closed at 5pm) The campground has some groceries including fruits, veggies, and meats. (but limited).

We saw a Kangaroo family (Dad, Mom, and Joey) hopping around the grounds. This was our first kangaroo sighting since being in Australia (unless you include the dead ones on the roads). The grounds have their own koala walk that takes you through a trail of Gum trees where you can spot koalas. We also saw Wallabies (or what we liked to refer to them as Wannabies) and a bunch of Galahs (Cockatoos).

Don't miss the Hanson Bay Wildlife Nocturnal Walk. We saw lots of wildlife including baby Koalas, Roos, Wannabies, Bushtail Possums, etc. The couple who manages the property are really passionate about the sanctuary and providing for a safe environment for the animals.

A sidenote: From Nov to March (I think) the pesky Aussie flies start to show up. These flies are extremely aggressive and are relentless in their pursuit of you. The minute you step out they are swarming around your face. At times, it made it very unpleasant to be walking around. Something a little deet could not solve. But if you're against putting pesticide on your body a very low tech method seems to work just as well. Just tear off a branch from one of the many bushes and use it to swat the flies away from your face. Make sure the branch has lots of leaves for maximum effect.

This caravan park exceeded our expectations. We camped here in Dec 2007 and had a brilliant stay. I've done a fair bit of camping in the past but never before have I seen so much Australian wildlife up close (besides in captivity!)... Koalas are easily spotted around the park as well as wallabies and possums.

The communal camp kitchen made our stay a lot more comfortable and was equipped with BBQ, electric stove, microwave and sink as well as some basic cooking utensils. There was an eating area with undercover bench seats and tables alongside the kitchen which was a real bonus!

The location is perfect for accessing the southern beaches and Flinders Chase National Park (10 mins drive) where you'll find Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Hanson's Bay is about a 10 min drive and Vivonne Bay is about 20-30 mins.

I will definitely be staying here when I visit KI again.

We stayed here for a night in March in one of the cabins. Our cabin had two bedrooms one twin and one double with a bathroom and a large open plan fully ftted kitchen and lounge area. The cabins were basic but comfortable and a great base to see some wildlife. At dusk we enjoyed sitting on the veranda watching the wallabies roam around and at night we had possums climbing over the roof. In the morning we took the Koala Trail walk which is on the campsite and saw plenty of wildlife. It's a fantastic base to visit the Flinders Chase National park and the Kelly Hill Caves. There is a small shop on the camp site which was also very useful.

  • Liked — Watching the wildlife at night so close by
  • Disliked — The smoke alarm kept going off when we were frying out steaks which was making the apartment very smoky
