Perhaps not quite there yet, but this "resort" is a diamond in the rough. The owners are working tirelessly to bring the standard up and their friendliness and enthusiasm is to be admired. The location and outlook are very pretty and being right on the beach, its a beautiful walk along the sand to Diamond Island, with lovely views of the ocean and Bicheno across the bay.
The apartment was a bit rough around the edges, but clean and neat and perfectly adequate for our needs. The long, steep, narrow stairs up to the bedrooms were interesting to navigate in the middle of the night (the bathroom is downstairs - the bedrooms upstairs) but we managed without any broken legs. The restaurant was great with beautifully fresh seafood, and a very engaging manager/chef/part-time waiter/sommelier and probably also kitchen hand in one. Parking was right at the door.
Fairy penguins have their nests on the property, and every night after sunset they come up from the ocean to their burrows. There is a paid Penguin "experience" which gives up close and personal access to these cute little critters in a special fenced off area. This for about $25 for adults and $15 for kids (or thereabouts).
OR there is a platform at the bottom of the lawn where you are welcome to go and stand at no charge, and some of the penguins will walk right past you. There is subdued lighting so as not to scare off the penguins, and with decent camera you can get some great photos just a couple of feet away. Perhaps there were more penguins in the paid area - don't know ... we weren't there - but the half dozen or so that came past us were cute as buttons. There are apparently nests under bushes and rocks all over the property and in the right season there are hundreds of penguins coming home to roost each night. The flip side of which is that at 4:00am there are hundreds waking up and heading back to sea!!! Even in April it was quite cold out watching penguins so it was necessary to rug up.

A hidden treasure, a diamond in the making. New managers are working hard to give this lovely older place a make-over to bring her up to date and make her a shiney jewel. They were very friendly and helpful and were available whenever we wanted assistance .

The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable, in fact the beds were fabulously comfortable and we had great nights' sleep during our stay. The views from the rooms were sensational - out across a white sand beach to Diamond Island and up the hill to the forested mountains behind.

There is a penguin rookery at the bottom of the property and we could walk down to a viewing platform in the evening to watch the little penguins come in. Such a fabulous experience for children.

The restaurant is open for evening meals and the chef's offerings were delicious and of a high quality. Breakfast is a simple continental breakfast but more than sufficient for the day. The view while having breakfast is terrific.

Thanks to Noel and Mel and their staff. We definitely will return to this great part of the world.

Room Tip: All rooms are great, upstairs provides the better overall view.

Very disappointing. The tourist bureau in Hobart recommended this "resort". Hopefully they might investigate the property before referring unsuspecting tourists . very tired and run down. There was no attempt to be accommodating. I was told to ring reception for any info but couldn't find any phone. I was told someone must have "taken it".

A nice surprise. A little bit rough around the edges with the exterior, but the room was just lovely. Great views, super comfortable king bed, very clean bathroom. Service was very personal from the young man at reception. Penguin viewing included in price. Would definitely stay again, and recommend to those visiting this lovely part of the world.

I seldom type reviews but was urged to do so after my recent visit to Bicheno. I booked this hotel months ago as a HK celebrity stayed here before, so I thought this must be one of the best in the area. When the date drew closer I started to look up reviews here and was very shocked by the numerous reviews saying that this resort is substandard, many even said it was the worst experience. I instantly regretted but there wasn't anything I can do as I paid in full for guarantee of reservation.

I lowered my expectation before my trip to avoid being disappointed, BUT, when I arrived at the resort i indeed W-O-W-ed. The resort room was VERY lovely and the view was SUPERB. Amenities are all good and I could not take my eyes off the beautiful view from the balcony. Although not in the Bicheno town centre, it's only 2-3 min drive from the town where there's a supermarket and lots of restaurants.

Mel who helped with my booking was very nice and helpful, answered each of my questions into detail and when we met during breakfast we also had a casual chat.

My hubby and I were VERY HAPPY of our stay and we would recommend our friends here too!

We had a great night here. It is obvious that the new managers are hard workers who are trying to tidy up and fix up. They were really friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable with loads of space. 2 singles in an upstairs room, our queen in a loft type room and then another single downstairs in the lounge room - while still allowing lots of room in the lounge area. We saw the penguins with the resort staff - there were only a few penguins because of the time of year - but there would have only been a few if we'd paid $125 for the tour too. The lounge/library was cool and we enjoyed a pre-dinner drink and entrees in the lounge before we went out the penguins. The kids had a ball playing on the big lawn area in front of the rooms. Breakfast - which was included in our tariff - was a continental - basic but perfectly adequate. This is not a Sebel Resort but it doesn't pretend to be. Great place for kids, lots of space in the room and lots of safe playing space outside the room. The views are spectacular and whilst there are a few maintenance issues I think the managers are working to get on top of those. We would definitely stay again.
