Bicheno's Ocean View Retreat
Ranked #4 of 6 Bicheno B&B and Inns
Reviewed 27 May 2014 via mobile

Our spa bedroom (unit 5) was well appointed and had a spacious bathroom. Very clean and comfortable. Our host Ken was attentive and made sure we were happily accommodated. Although the retreat is along Tasman Highway, we had a peaceful night sleep. This is because the retreat is located high on a hill which affords what must be the best views in Bicheno. Occupants of the retreat are able to access the adjacent paddock leading down to the beach. A short hop (in a car) into town.

- A few km north from Bicheno, 5 mins drive.
- The view is just great, having 180 degree see view on a small hill. I have a great outdoor breakfast with the view.
- Full cooking facilities and essentials including microwave and oven.
- I chose the studio flat with no sea view from room (so I give only 3 stars for my room), the view from larger rooms deserve a higher price (deserve 4.5 stars).
- I visited the family room, which is big and include a private laundry.
- The little garden is full of animals’ visit card.. Not difficult to find animals in mid-night and early morning.
- The barbecue facility is working but full of spider web, just ignore it..

Room Tip: No seaview and garden in studio room..

Bicheno was our 'rest day' during our Tassie trip. And we couldn't have asked for a better place! Reading other reviews we had booked Unit 1 - which definitely seems to be the best of the other units. The views were to die for. from the bedroom, the living area, the balcony, it was living in a picture perfect postcards. The unit was large and spacious for the four of us and my kids simply loved it there.
We went around Bicheno for about an hour in the morning, brought some fresh sea-food, had lunch in the balcony and then an afternoon siesta, all overlooking the ocean (it seemed better than Wineglass bay at Freyicinet).
I would definitely recommend it, provided you are not looking to just stop-over for the night. And Unit 1 definitely will make you want to stay longer.

This place has the best views I have ever seen in a holiday place. Restful, homely with plenty of room for 2 although 4 could comfortably fit. Good kitchen. Just needed a heater in the bathroom! Lovely blue wrens hopping about in the morning on the lawn outside. The room allowed warm sun and views that changed with the hour towards sunset. Very comfortable beds. Not far from town centre for shopping for some food essentials. Within walking distance of Diamond Island on good paths. The hosts were very helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: We stayed in the downstairs suite for easy access but views amazing from all rooms.

Our experience here was completely different to other Tassie accommodation. This is not a property to be recommended. No ocean view from our studio, only the car park and messy sitting area with a dirty barbeque. The bedroom was tiny - one had to squeeze around the bed to gain access to the far side of the bed. The kitchen, sitting and eating area was possibly 5-6 sqm. and not usable. The bathroom was an add-on and very cold, needing a severe floor clean and renovation.

The walls were paper-thin and plumbing was noisy from an adjoining unit. On our arrival we were met by the proprietor and briefly shown the room. Tea and coffee were provided, but for the rate and in comparison to other accommodation on our trip, one would expect breakfast and other provisions.

A small radiator was provided that barely coped to keep the room warm. The extra blanket was somewhat tatty with holes in it. Overall, a very poor experience.

Room Tip: Do not accept Unit 4 - it is terrible!!!!!

My party of 3 loved everything about the place. There is something very special and charming about it. The unit we stayed in (2) is fully equipped; comfortable and 'cozy'. It felt 'great' from the first moment! The Retreat is close to Bicheno and yet is slightly secluded which adds to its charm... and YES... the ocean and coastal views are just BRILLIANT!
Ken, you have been a great host... Our stay was too short; we'll come back!!

We were happy to arrive, Ken greeted us warmly and offered us the B&B room (with a spa) A lovely room, with everything we needed and more. The view was magic and the next morning the sunrise over the bay was spectacular and we watched it from the bed (see photo).
We went down to the Gulch and the blowhole and spent a lovely night in Bicheno.
Nothing is in short walking distance but we were fine as we had a car.
