“Renovated”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

Recommended by the local tourist information centre for dinner we decided to have a look and were pleasantly surprised as the motel section appears to have undergone renovations and the rooms were a good size and neat, clean and good value.

As a bonus there was a good restaurant attached to the hotel with a reasonable selection of meals and wines. Once again excellent value and a good place to rest a weary body.

Room Tip: All the rooms appear to face towards the river

I think rating should indicate a value for money rather than just overall impression. Some places you pay a lot for and get little in return, others are often quite reasonable and you get a good deal. This is where the Comfort Inn The Pier fits in. It is not over the top in any sense of the words, but it is a place to find a comfortable and spacious room with parking right outside the door. The hotel had some old-world character and the dining room serves very good food at expected prices. Staff are helpful and the overall feeling is somewhat "rural". Therefore, fo me, this hotel provides good value for money with plenty of comfort and amenities to back it up.

A clean, pleasant motel room. There is a beautiful view of the river but unfortunately the car park separates the room from it so you have to take a walk to take advantage, but the walk around the curve of the river to see the sunset is well worth the effort. Take a walk around the town also as the old historic houses are quite lovely. There are no clothes washing facilities at the motel but there is a laundromat in town. The bar of the Pub is tiny but the dining room is OK. The reception staff are friendly and helpful. One receptionist sold me a stamp out of her own purse. They charge a Credit card fee but this appears common in Tasmania.

I have stayed at The Pier before, however, only in winter.
I arrived yesterday on a 30degrees plus really hot day. No air conditioning in room - or on property - regardless that it is advertised in the Comfort Inn accommodation guide. The room was stifling hot. No fans either. Fortunately, reception managed to find me a small fan, which I was very greatful for. I know the heat is not normal for Tasmania, but surely a cheap fan for each room could be provided ? It's not a cheap place to stay - for $160 per night, I would expect a fan in the room.
$20 minimum charge for breakfast - which I could not find any reference to on the Room Service order form - and did not realise until check out.
The real issue for me was the 5% American Express surcharge. Yes, I could have paid with another card, but my work prefers me to pay with AmEx. I am used to a surcharge, and don't have an issue with that - but 5% is profiteering. AmEx does NOT charge their merchants 5% - usually a maximum of 3%. Left a bad taste in my mouth.
Will probably look for alternate accommodation next time.
Cheers.

This is a hotel motel. If you remember this you'll enjoy your stay. Rooms are comfy and clean with a lovely outlook across the river. If you want 5 star go to Peppers and pay accordingly. The meals in the pub are fabulous but they are pub meals. But why do these places persist with the dam cc surcharge. It leaves a very sour taste in ones mouth on check out.

George Town is a very quiet and pretty place.
The rooms are adequate and the motel is well located. All the fixtures and fittings look like they came out of a bargain bin and the quality added to this feeling. Having said that, the place is good value for money and I would stay there again.

We stayed for one night last week (Nov 2012). I feel mean being truthful about the accommodation as the check-in staff were lovely. Unfortunately though I felt let down by the reality of the accommodation in comparison to what the hotel site says.

We booked a two bedroom villa with Tamar river views. The pier itself is really just a long jetty with people fishing off it. Our villa was in a block of about six that are across the carpark from the main hotel (ie pub and accommodation). The outside of the block is grey brick which doesn't help the gloomy feel. There are villas upstairs and we were given the downstairs one. The balcony was really just a brick wall area which looked across the road to - directly in front, and old house that is quite run down with a family who sat at the front drinking, smoking. Slightly to the right the view is down the river and the pier. However as you would have to sit out there looking at the road (although quiet) it was not pleasant. I have a feeling there weren't any chairs on the balcony anyway and it was also very small.

The room really needs an update. The walls and kitchen counters were pale pink and the carpet is a dirty pinkish colour.

There really weren't two rooms as the room with the queen bed also had the tv, and dining table. There is a bathroom that adjoins both bedrooms with a maroon shower curtain.

Unfortunately George Town also felt gloomy as a number of shops are closing down. We were there on a public holiday so the fact that so many shops were closed also didn't help the gloomy feeling.

We stayed in George Town to do the fairy penguin tour and this was well worth it.

We are normally not so picky with accommodation as we do try and stick to a budget. We don't expect the latest in interior decor but this really was very dated.

It was also a little noisy from 9,00pm to around 10.30ish but I am not sure if that was from the pub or the people upstairs.

Unfortunately we would not stay here again. The staff were lovely and really friendly and I don't like leaving a review like this but I do feel the "villa" did not live up to our expectations.
