Description: The Pheasant sits between Halstead and Sudbury amid rolling countryside. A 500-year old building, the pub restaurant has been completely redecorated by James and Diana Donoghue since they purchased it in the summer of 2006, with the addition of a Smoke House in 2007 and then built a separate dwelling for 5 luxury en-suite bedrooms at the rear of the car-park completed 2011 and then, the purchase of a 1 acre garden to grow their own fruit and vegetables. The Pheasant is a small country pub with beams running across the ceiling and the dining area is spread across three rooms with an archway between.. Recently re-decorated with homely and comforting upholstery, each room has a welcoming wood burner to keep the winter chill at bay and there's a genuinely homely feel about the place, with its natural wood tables and plenty of interesting reading matter within arms reach. In the last eight years, the Donoghue's have won various awards for all their hard work and are now starting to reap what they have sown, with recently been awarded, AA Pub of the Year for England 2014/15, Pub of the Year for Alistair Sawday's 2014/15, Essex Life Chef of they Year 2012, Pub of the Year for Essex Life 2012, Best Food Pub in East Anglia 2011, plus AA rosette for culinary excellence and 5 AA Stars for its first class accommodation.

“so good”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

On a business trip to an unknown part of Essex we stopped and asked a local man where we could get a bite to eat. He recommended the Pheasant. From the moment we entered the premises everything was right: decor, ambience, welcome, menu, clean toilets and charming character pictures on the wall. Enjoyed a nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc and had the venison burger/trio of local sausages which were excellent. A professionally run establishment indeed.

“Faultless!!”
Reviewed 4 April 2014

We have just returned from a night's stay here on a Secret Escapes deal. We had the Capt. Oates suite, which is delightful and the bed was extremely comfortable. The food here is superb!! Both the Gressingham Duck and the Venison Steak we had for our mains were easily the nicest plates of food we have ever had! Breakfast too was a delight. We chose the Full English and again it could not be faulted. Every flavour on those plates of food were fantastic and we have had a fair few plates of food over the years! Diana and James were charming hosts and the staff here are lovely. This is a place we will definitely be returning to and luckily for us we don't live too far away hooray!!

This was our second stay at The Pheasant. Diana and James are wonderful hosts and made us extremely comfortable and content.
Beautiful food made from locally sourced ingredients, attention to detail all served up in a cosy yet refined atmosphere.
We look forward to our third stay in June. Thank you!

“Disappointed.”
Reviewed 30 March 2014 via mobile

Drove 41 miles for Mothers Day, to end up squashed in a corner of the bar on a rickety chair. Had to breath in to get to my seat. Needed a magnifying glass to see the salmon pate on the plate, had some nice salad with it though. On to the main course, it appears you only get the selection of lovely fresh veg if you order the Beef and Pork. Lamb only gets greens and potatoes with tiny portions at that.No offer of any sauces. Usually we can't manage a dessert, no fear here we were still starving. Puds ok.
It seems the day of the little gift for Mother is over.
