Catching up with friends is always a joy but made even better by them recommending a fantastic restaurant. We had planned a long weekend in Melbourne and managed to get the coldest, rainy Friday to arrive from a sunny Sydney day.
Our friends recommended this Chez Oliver in Prahran as they said it was their favourite French restaurant and this didn’t disappoint. We left the cold and walked into a warm and inviting dining room. The menu isn’t extensive and it doesn’t need to be if you’re serving up delicious and traditional French cuisine.
To share we ordered Champagne Oysters. These oysters come with a leek and champagne reduction with gratin and lightly grilled. I could have been happy with just those as they were moorish.
For mains, my travelling buddy ordered and the ‘Frozzie Duck’, its a double roasted duck with mash, bok choy in a ginger and red current jelly sauce. It’s a good thing we share our food as this was so delicious. Equally divine was the Tournedos Rossini that lives up to its description of a melting grass fed thick eye fillet with creamy mash potatoes, slice of foie gras and mushroom sauce with truffle oil.
Tip: They have a Duck and Pinot night every Wednesday and for $50 you get a Duck main, side of green salad or beans. A glass of Pinot Nior and Café Gourmand for dessert. You can also dine there for lunch with the Prix Fixe for an entrée and main for $25.00 or entrée, main and dessert for $35.00.
The service is friendly and charming and I enjoyed a view of the bustling and efficient kitchen. Entrees start from $16.00 and run to $20.00. Mains average $37.00 to $49 for the Tournedos Rossini. Chez Oliver is pricey but it is a great choice for a romantic dinner and perfect for catching up with old friends.
