Albany used to have a really good 5 star hotel overlooking Middleton Beach. When you considered going to Albany it was always top of the list with nothing else even coming close. Defying all logic we were told that a dodgy international conglomerate bought it, bulldozed it and then went GFC bust before they could rebuild. The site of the former 5 star is now a sandpit. A sandpit with one of the towns best views! With this in mind, we approached our trip to Albany rather dubiously. There seems to be a whole lot of 70s motels and caravan parks on offer – for such a beautiful place with a reasonable population the lack of a high end hotel is insane and, so we are reliably advised, a bona fide sore point with the locals. We generally go for the larger branded hotels – been caught too many times with small private operators but the Albany Central Apartments might just start to change the way we think.
Modern, tastefully decorated and obviously a privately owned establishment, the attention to detail was both a surprise and genuinely endearing. From visitor tips (activities, dining etc.) to handmade biscuits, the people running this place are doing it with particular aplomb. A BIG tick, free wi-fi is offered to all guests as is the fact that the operators aren’t in your face all the time (often a problem with small, privately owned places!).
We have stayed in heaps of self-catering places and this one is easily one of the best equipped and presented. Dishwasher, oven, hob, sandwich press…there was even a set of straightening tongs in the bathroom. Everything was spotless. Unlike many self-catering places it doesn’t seem cheap or nasty. There is a high quality feel throughout and a terrific feather duvet to keep you toasty on Albany’s chilly mornings.
Given the town’s considerable history it was really great to stay in an historic modernised building that was right in the CBD (the main street is a 2 minute walk away). Lots of the other accommodation options appeared to be away from the centre of town but not actually anywhere spectacular.
The terrific Albany Farmers Markets happen every Saturday morning and are right across the road should you be seeking fresh local produce for the fridge. Heaps of eateries nearby but if you want to do yourself a real favour then head out to Emu Point (stunning!). The café is a total winner.
It’s a BIG thumbs up from us.
