We stayed here for 6 nights and found the place to be conveniently situated (near the swan river, Zoo and short drive into the city). Rooms were clean and comfortable albeit a bit of an odd decor in the form of old wooden furniture Balinese style despite the overall apartment being rather modern. Service was decent. We didn't eat here however so cannot comment on food quality. The only issue we had were with the extra charges that came with the baby cot (mind you its just a portable one), daily parking fee and exorbitant wifi charges!

Overall it was a good comfortable stay but don't forget to check the extra charges!!

Room Tip: get a room in the new wing as they looked better furnished.

This is a good place to stay if you are looking for a self-contained unit. We stayed for just one night. Our first urprise was that we found the address that is generally given does not register with our Tom Tom GPS. Make sure you put the place name as Como, not Perth. Melville Parade is divided by a large golf course and if you are on the wrong side of elville Parade you may have difficulty as it is not a particularly easy place to find being close to the Fremantle Freeway. We found that once we put in the suburb name we were okay. Fortunately there was no noise from the traffic on the Freeway.
The room was comfortable. Our room rate included breakfast and we can recommend it. Parking was free and that was appreciated. There was no free wi-fi in the room however. That is still a problem in Australia generally. Hotels in Australia have to realise that almost everywhere overseas, especially in tourist areas, free wifi is a standard expectation, particularly for business travellers. As a business traveller I am now actively booking hotels that have free wifi internet.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the Swan river is preferred. ask for this when you book if you wish such a room.

We stayed at the Esplanade River Suites for 2 nights in September 2013.

Our overall impression is that this is a clean and modern apartment hotel. We did not dine in the Pagoda Restaurant or use room service, so we cannot make comment on these services.

What we liked:

- Overlooking the Swan River. While the apartments are opposite a busy major road, when you are sitting on the couch or lying in bed, you cannot see the road or traffic.

- The hotel room (two bedroom apartment) was spacious and clean. Room decor was OK, but starting to show signs of wear, such as the carpet and couch coverings. Layout was excellent. Double bedrooms on either side of the lounge/dining/kitchen area, each with an ensuite bathroom with spa. In one bathroom was a washing machine/dryer combination. The kitchen was small, but had essential appliances, such as an oven, microwave oven, dishwasher, and fridge.

- The hotel was quiet. Our apartment was at the front of the hotel (no balcony), and the windows doubled-glazed. There was no notable noise from the major road opposite the apartments.

Other thoughts:
- If you don’t have a car, transport can be a problem. While there is a train line directly in front of the apartments, the nearest train station is some 2 kilometers away. We walked to the Mends Street Jetty to catch the ferry from South Perth to the Perth CBD. The ferry ride was less than 10 minutes and appears to run frequently. The walk from the apartments to the Mends Street Jetty took about 40 minutes. On the way, you pass the Perth Zoo, so walking time from the apartments to the zoo would have been 30 minutes or so.

- Nearby, about 10 minutes walk away, are some shops on Preston Street, including a very good IGA Supermarket with plenty of fresh, prepared food items, a bottle shop, a pub with bistro meals, and other shops.

We booked this hotel for a 6 day holiday in Perth. The location looked good ( and was) as it gave easy access to highways. As we were going to undertake several day tours while in Perth this location was good for us.

The hotel was easy to find and presentation was good. Our first surprise came when we were advised that it was $15 a day to park in the carpark. With a hire care there was little choice!

The apartment was sizeable and well equipped and we were happy with it. However note that there are no opening windows and no fan in the bathroom.

On asking for the code for WiFi was advised that it would be $49.50 for 5 days. I was taken aback at this price as this was more than we pay in a month at home and there were no wi fi hot spots in the lobby or restaurant. This hotel promotes that is is a 4 star international hotel. This being the case we expected to have either free or low cost access as we have experienced in hotels around the world. At a minimum there should have been a free area at least in the lobby.

There is a restaurant and pool on site.

My taxi couldn't find the place, I was double-booked into a room which was occupied (she wasn't happy as I fumbled to get the opener into the door), the fuse box beside my bed hummed all night, a call from the Eastern States was not put through to my room in spite of a specific request the night before. Otherwise, an average place, overpriced, tries hard on service levels but way short on even being average. At breakfast this morning, I filled in my own entry docket with name, room number, choice of continental/hot breakfast, and signature! The entire breakfast experience did not involve any contact with (sparse) staff at all. Is that called self-serve and an honesty system?

Room Tip: 3rd floor, away from the freeway opposite, facing the pool (except in summer!)

The apartments are a good size. Service is good and the buffet was good with a good variety. Very over priced but then what isn't in Perth?? Unfortunately it's straight across from a main hyway - don't expect to be able to sit quietly on the balcony - if you have one - as it's way too noisy with non stop traffic.

I also have a gripe.
I am not the sort of mother who allows my children to run amok with total disregard for other guests. So imagine my surprise when at 8:30pm we received a phone call from reception asking us to keep our noise level down because we were being too loud. TOO LOUD?! My husband and I were sitting in the lounge with the children, talking quietly while they were playing a game before bed - walking around on their hands and knees - you know - as children do!

Reception called us again maybe five minutes later to complain again about our noise. Apparently there were guests in the apartment below us with a six year old child that needed to go to bed!

My husband and I could easily hold a conversation and the kids were not doing anything wrong and certainly not making excessive noise. We were right there with them!
I didn't know the whole hotel had to tip toe around because a 6yr old on the second floor wanted to go to sleep!
I felt really bad for my children who were on holidays and playing nicely together and not doing anything wrong. It was only 8:30pm at that - we were on holidays!. Were they supposed to sit in a corner and not say a word?

Either the floors are paper thin in this place or the 6yr olds parents think their child is "precious" or it was a combination of both. I can't believe that the staff couldn't even be bothered coming up to our room to speak with us after that first call about the complaint - they would have a least seen what was actually going on in our room - we certainly were not having a party!.

Ether way if you have children I would re-think staying here as it is not child friendly in my opinion and we will not be staying here again. That whole situation really soured our whole stay.

Room Tip: If you decide to stay here ask for one right at the back away from the constant traffic noise.

Comfortable rooms with all the things you need. Unfortunately the restaurant on site and room service were a let down.

Not enough cutlery was given for room service. Despite ordering 2 entrees, mains and dessert only 1 set was given. The prices were quite expensive also & I expected better quality food to reflect this.

The breakfast in the restaurant in the morning was horrendous. No wait staff, staff running around disorganised and quality of food was poor.
