“Wonderful ski trip”
Reviewed 13 February 2011

Just come back from a long weekend in Oberlech. Stayed at the Hotel Montana and the hotel is superb. Great food and the service is great. Rooms were comfortable and to a high standars. The hotel also has a spa area with a pool, steam room and sauna. All these facilities were nice and made a welcome break from skiing. You can also book yourself a massage at the hotel.
Oberlech as a resort is lovely. Not the most lively place so I think it's better suited for families and couples. The scenery is fantastic and the skiing was great. I highly recommend it!

We stayed at the Hotel Montana this March for a week of spring skiing. It was our first time to the Lech/Oberlech area and we had a FABULOUS time. We are long-time skiiers and have lived and currently have a second home in the Rockies (Park City, Utah and Big Sky, MT) but we have long wanted to try skiing in this part of the world. We chose Oberlech as a base for its intimate size, car-free context, huge ski area, and ski in/ski out convenience. We were extremely happy with our choice and are making a booking for next March back at the Montana! the Hotel Montana is a lovely, warm, gracious hotel with just the right balance of impeccable service, comfort, and character without being formal or too "much". The highlights for us at the Montana are unquestionably the outstanding cuisine/restaurant and the fantastic outdoor patio/sun terrace where drinks and lunch are served in the sunshine. Seriously - the food is outstanding and would make any foodie quite happy. Champagne and foie gras terrine, caviar, tagliatelle with truffle sauce....all in the sunshine straight off the piste and by the lift? this is the place. Our room was a suite facing the rear of the hotel with a large balcony. It was beautifully and comfortably furnished and very spacious. The style of the hotel is typically and traditionally Austrian with nice modern touches. We chose the half board option and wouldn't dream of doing it any differently (after trying food at a few other places that were of equal or higher rating than the Montana). Breakfast buffet is large and delicious, dinner is a different 5 course culinary meal every night.

We did not bring our 4 year old with us and we may just do it alone again next year....but in future trips we would not hesitate to bring our son. The area is extremely child-friendly and the ski instruction/ski schools look to be VERY high quality - especially compared to the US. The children's ski zone is directly behind the Montana and the meeting place for the Oberlech ski school is directly in front of the hotel. There is a wonderful toboggan run from the little town of Oberlech down through the trees on a winding path (groomed and lit into the night) all the way down to Lech. Every hotel has toboggans to borrow/rent. A fun way to go down to Lech for shopping, drinks, nightlife.....the gondola whisks you right back up to Oberlech in 5 minutes for a peaceful sleep and skiiing in the morning!

There are fancier establishments in Lech and Oberlech in the sense that you might get grander public spaces, fancier furniture, bigger spa area, etc. but Hotel Montana is perfectly situated, perfectly "fancy" enough for us (and i imagine most people), with unbeatable service and food. One thing to note though - if you are looking for a very lively place with a happening scene at night - Oberlech in general and certainly the Montana specificially, are NOT for you....its pretty quiet - not in a bad or dead feeling way - just a peaceful way. Lech has wilder and more active nightlife/hotels for sure. We can't recommend it enough.

The location was outstanding since the hotel was only 5 minutes away from the cable car ( Gondola) and the chair lift .
No problem to get down to the town Lech .You could take the Gondola, walk down the path starting right in front of the hotel
or ski down the piste.

The Kids Ski School meeting point was only meters away from the hotel . Could easily pick up the kids for a lunch on the sunny
terrace of the hotel.

The 5 course dinners were a superb culinary experience .Meticulously prepared and beautifully served. On offer were
also a separate kids menu and an alternative mehu, both of high standard and great taste.

We were also very impressed with the very friendly and attentive staff who were very warm towards kids.
Never heard the words ''no'' or ''cannot''.Excellent service!
The family owning the hotel was always present and were treating the hotel guests really as own ''their guests''.

The hotel served the kids dinner at 6 and started to show a kids cartoon at 7 pm , exactly at the same time when
dinner was served for the parents.
What a brilliant idea !

Breakfast was good but I yearned for some fresh pastries or some pancakes which unfortunately were not
served.
The pool and SPa areas were all nice and sufficient

I found the Fitness center disappointing though. It was very tiny and incredibly hot making any workout
quite impossible.

We stayed in the Chalet .It was quite a walking distance from the lobby of the main hotel making it difficult to walk back and
forth in case you forgot something in the room. However, the nice room was making up for the walk.
Our family room was very spacious, cozy
and clean. It had a vast bathroom with a jacuzzi ,a small kitchen and a nice balcony.
The only problem I personally faced was that the bed was quite hard.My husband on the other hand was
not disturbed by this at all

Overall we had a very pleasant stay.
I must mention though that excellent service, location and food did not come cheap.

This is the second year we have been to The Montana It is the first time in 20+ years of skiing together that we have been back to the same hotel. The ski in ski out situation above Lech means that you can go into the town, gondola, and enjoy the nightlife without it afflicting you when you want to sleep. The Ortlieb family run a very pleasing hotel with good facilities and an excellent restaurant. The gourmet meal on Thursdays is a trial for one's waist!

Nothing seems too much trouble for the front of house staff who all were, at the minimum, bi-lingual.

As non-smokers, the only irritation was the management permitting smoking in the bar area which after several years of smoke-free pubs was an unpleasant reminder of what we used to put up with. Am I becoming a grumpy old man?

Not the cheapest hotel in town by any stretch but it is worth paying extra for the comforts.

The montanta is a must if you appreciate good food. What a delightful menu. Every meal was a sight to behold. Even the children from age 8 to 14 were impressed. Nothing was too much trouble and the alternative and kids menus were excellent. Very friendly and helpful staff. What a glorious end to the day to spend a couple of hours ploughing through the 5 course extravaganza!! Lovely cheeses and delicious puddings. Food of the highest quality. Even if it sounds not to your taste, TRY IT! you wont be disappointed. Small pool nice spa but no jacuzzi which was unfortunate. If you are ski ing in oberlech which is fantastic go to the montana! Nice lounge and bar areas.

The Hotel Montana in Oberlech is something else. First, the familie Ortlieb who own the place run it hands-on. Second, they treat their guests with dignity and grace. And finally, in our case, they treated my son as an old friend visiting from North America. The location is hard to beat, just 25meters or so from the Gondola into Oberlech, and then you have tunnels if you don't want to walk through the snow. You arrive in Lech at the Gondola station, hand over your luggage, its up in your room in 30mins or so. Then the Hotel itself, you look out the windows or stand in your balcony, and the views are breathtakingly peaceful, all alpine and pretty, and we did get to see an avalanche come down on the other side, of Lech, i.e. Ruffikopf side over Lech, but in an open zone! Now that was an awe-inspiring view, it was out of range to harm anyone as such. Note the Oberlech side is all gentle slopes relatively speaking.

The Montana has a sun-terrace, i.e. outdoor patio which is large like most others and you can just lounge there at will. The hotel has an indoor heated pool which kids will love even after a hard day of skiing. The spa is efficient and helpful for aching bones and quads, shoulders, and thighs. Oh, the rooms are very nice, and cozy, even the small ones, the bathrooms are spotless and clean, and the balconies round it off nicely.

Ok, the food, frankly, i have not tasted such good food anywhere in NYC, London or Paris, and that was for each of the seven days. Dinner is a celebration in understated culinary excellence. I dont know about anyone else, but the fondue simply melted in my mouth. In addition, they acccommodate children's tastes, my son even got past his usual beige diet, and love their kaiserschmarren, weiner schnitzel etc. If what is on the regular menu does not suit, they are happy to cook you alternatives, one night i was offered a steak and man, that was some medium-rare filet! Breakfast is sumptuous and extensive. Room service is available for a nominal charge. Note alcohol is not inexpensive, but then again, not sure it is in Europe period, and this is Lech. The staff in the restaurants, their managers are stellar company, and so subtle in the way they handle any requests. There is a gentility in their manner which makes the guest feel the warmth of their welcome.

You ski into the hotel, and ski right out, no need to walk. The ski room has the usual heated boot racks, is neat, and convenient. I don't know about the 4*'s they have, this is 5* to me, understated elegance, and gracious hospitality especially where children are welcomed with open arms. No 4-seasons can match this sort of class, this is class, its what you feel after all and not what it appears to be.

If one is looking for an outdoor hot-tub with raucous beer drinking, this is not the place. This is a place to chill out and contemplate the day's skiing, look forward to the next day's runs, revel in one's kids joy and just appreciate how lucky one can be to find a refuge such as this.

And for those who have dogs, I certainly saw guests with their dogs there.

Finally, we are going back, this was our first time, and what a week, stellar hotel, 60 degrees F weather, and snow everywhere. This is big mountain skiing, endless trails, and lots of nice places to stop and get some liquids or good food on all the mountains.

I hav been skiing in the Alps for 25 years, We have tried a number of first class hotels in e.g. Arosa, Klosters ,Davos , Verbier and Zeermatt. Non of them comes close to Hotel Montana in Oberlech regarding the food and the location. Just the best! Rooms are nice and clean, but nothing spectacular. Spa is nice and restaurant and bar is cosy. Service is superb!
