“nothing special”
Reviewed 30 May 2013

We ate here twice during a 24 hour stay in Hameenlinna (once for dinner, once for lunch). There wasn't anything particularly bad, but also little that was good. The service was ok, the food was alright, but nothing stood out, other than the scammy hidden charging for drinking water. The lunch buffet was firmly mediocre.

“A real find in Haemeenlinna”
Reviewed 2 September 2012

After 10 days travelling around Finland, with only one or two good meals (and many indifferent ones), we were delighted to discover this evening the restaurant Halla, which was recommended by the receptionist of our hotel.

Our meal at Halla was tasty and imaginative: the salad bar (included in the cost of the main courses) had a wide choice of interesting salads such as celery, finely-grated carrot, beetroot in light mayonaise, tiny florets of cauliflower, pasta and peas, and several others.

For the main course, I took grilled salmon with creme fraiche and chives sauce, with julienne vegetables, peashoots and mash, and my husband had perch fillets with carrot butter sauce and dill-flavoured mashed potatoes. Our dessert was almond-marinated strawberries with white chocolate ice-cream. We each had a large glass of excellent Pinot Grigio, and my husband also took a small glass of good Alsace dessert wine. To end the meal we had a small and strong espresso coffee, and the bill came to 85 euros for two.

The food portions were not huge, but everything was well-prepared and delicious, and we felt the chef had got it all just right.

In particular we were glad that it was possible to order a glass of wine of good quality, after having experienced many restaurants in Finland which only had available full bottles of rather indifferent origin and quality.

Our waiter, a lady, was competent and knowledgeable. The restaurant is in a cellar and is pleasantly arranged in several adjoining rooms, both large and small.

I don't often click "excellent" in my reviews, but this restaurant deserves it.
