The spa is nice, especially when traveling with kids. The hotel starts to show its age and could use some refurbishing.

The Christmas dinner was excellent and breakfast was ok as well.

The location is stunning, at the lake in a park. I've only been here in wintertime but I can imagine that the place is absolutely gorgeous during summer.

Location is beautiful and area peaceful but the hotel is quite far from the city centre. Friendly service at the reception. Room was a bit outdated but clean and with good view. Large parking area.Breakfast not very tasty.

OK for one night stay.

While selecting a Finnish hotel one needs to understand a few basic facts:

1. Most Finnish hotel chains (Sokos, Rantasipi, Cumulus etc.) have, at best, a 4-star rating.
2. Finnish hotels cater with Finnish customers in mind: functionality wins it over luxury
3. Hotel service in Finland is everything that you need, and nothing that you don't; ie: don't expect to be pampered
4. The selection of Food & Beverages at Finnish hotels varies greatly - and are very location-sensitive. Lower your expectations the farther you are from a metropolitan city center.

My wife and I got married at this hotel. We had over 50 guests staying over, and we received no complaints.

Cons:
- This hotel has not been refurbished in a while, although they are making some efforts to slowly upgrade their fixtures/amenities
- One reviewer mentioned that the hotel is like "a giant maze". This is true. However, the "maze" factor is lessened if you choose your hotel room carefully
- Basic rooms are ... basic. Upgrade if you can.
- Suites are miserably old, need refurbishing, and are not worth the money
- You may struggle to find staff at the lobby bar

Pros:
- Friendly, and reliable service
- Nicely stacked breakfast buffet
- Beautiful and well-lit dining area
- Functional lobby
- Adequate rooms (premium rooms with a lake view)
- Unbeatable setting (by the lake and a national park)
- Good spa (access included in the price)

Bottom line:
My wife and I left this hotel with the overall feeling of being satisfied. We both live in Finland, but we are also well-traveled. If you're looking to take a break away from the city, then this is a good and reliable hotel to stay at. The food is alright, the drink selection is adequate, and the service is friendly (by Finnish standards). The rooms are functional, and the spa is a nice amenity. The area in which the hotel is located is really lovely and welcoming (walks, tennis, golf, lake etc.). I would recommend this hotel, but would advise you to pick your room wisely: preferably the premium rooms with a lake view.

Room Tip: Premium room with a lake view

Spa Hotel Rantasipi Aulanko is really basic hotel, which is -frankly- a giant maze. At least for me it was for a start when I could not find myself to the spa. :)

Well the overall:

Service: basic, but friendly. Average.

Value: poor, because breakfast was beneath average and rooms were pretty much basic.

Sleep quality: pretty good. Bed was comfortable and sheets felt comfortable too. I also liked "good night candies" at the top of the pillows.

Cleanliness: good, nothing bad to say about this matter.

Location: Average, nothing good or bad to say about this.

Rooms: Poor, poor and poor. Frankly I was really disappointed because when the window was big, the curtains were not so good. And the main thing: the bathroom. Imagine a bath, were tap is broken (but it worked) and the bath plug was too small for the hole and water runned out because of that bath plug. God I was so disappointed...

Spa: Spa is actually quite good. You can swim there or take a whirlpool bath in several pools.

Breakfast: poor or average. I have seen much better breakfasts. :(

Room Tip: I don't know what room is good. Hotel is a maze.

This was our 3rd time in this hotel. The hotel is situated in Aulanko area, the city of Hämeenlinna.

There is a quite small (800 square meters) but extremely versatile indoor swimming pool section in this hotel. There are a main pool like a lagoon with massaging showers and bubbles (water temperature +33 degrees Celsius, depth 1.20 meters), a hot pool (+37 degrees, depth 0.75 meters), a cold pool (+4 degrees), a whirlpool (jacuzzi, +33 degrees), a small water slide, a children's pool (+35 degrees, depth 0.20 meters), a separate pool for swimming and an outdoor pool (+28 degrees, 1.20 meters) there.

We had a connection room for two adults and two children - with a very good value for money. However, some small details were worn and out-of-date. Actually the hotel has been a hospital during the war and after that the Olympics Village for athletes in 1952. However, the spa and swimming pool department are in a new building (opened in 2006). So the spa and swimming pools are much better than rooms. However, there are also better Vallila Design Rooms and the new Aulangonranta Holiday House (52 square meters).

The breakfast was OK but not as good as in most Finnish hotels. There are bowling and other sport activities in the hotel. Also tennis and riding are possible near the hotel.

The swimming pool section and the location of the hotel are the best things in this hotel. The hotel is situated next to Lake Vanajavesi, a big golf course and Aulanko nature reserve. There are good hiking routes starting from the hotel. You can walk 0.6-2.0 kilometers to the beautiful pond named Joutsenlampi (Swan Pond), Aulanko Observation Tower and Karhuluola (Bear Cave with bear sculptures). There are also campfire places near the hotel. You can even walk 2-3 kilometers to the Medieval Castle of Hämeenlinna and the city center. Or walk only 0.6 kilometers and go to have a lunch in Aulangon Kievari (Aulanko Inn).

Just to tell everyone that the SPA is OK and the hotel is just basic. Meaning barely OK. Starting with the logo on the roof, that could and should say the whole name "AULANKO" and not just "NKO". -> Please switch the lamps or the fuse.
Coming to the reception. It would be nice to hear that someone would say; -Good day and welcome to our hotel, how can we help you? OR Is there something else that we can do for you? That did not happen!! Coming attitude of the personnel. This is not what I would expect from a place like this. Example: There was a plate that got broken by a boy with his mother, the personnel just complained and gave the mother a reprimand that; -You could have picked up the pieces or at least told us about it.... Like no one in the restaurant didn't hear that plate got broken.
The service from the maintenance people were friendly and nice and the rooms were clean and nice as expected, except for the broken remote control for the TV set. There is though one thing that could be done better. All the trollies that are hanging around in the corridors could be taken away during lunch and break times. Meaning that people would not have to smell all the dishes and linings that are gathered during cleaning rooms.
Sorry to say but service mindset is not really where it should beat at this place. Br, Johan Halvarsson
