Podere Ampella

We hade a wonderful stay with our kids and made many new friends.
Our kids are quite young and had a great time in the swimming pool.
The views from Podere Ampella have to be seen to be believed simply breathtaking.
Ideally placed for short trips with Pienza on our doorstep and the hilltop villages of montisi and san giovanni d'asso within 2km. Everything you could want in both villages
restaueants, cafe/ bar, bakery, butcher and a small supermarket.
Montalcino is only 20 mins from Podere Ampella and we made a day trip to Siena which is only 30 mins away. One real bonus here is the natural outdoor hot spa's at bagno Di Vignone also with a great choice of restaurants.
The real question is will i be back. I can absoultely say that yes i will and would highly recommend a visit to see this tuscany hilltop.

It was an ok place, we arrived with our little son after having stayed near San Gimignano for a few days and although the website is fantastically well done, the place itself is nice...but...it's a bit disjointed. It's hard to explain unless you're there. It is very well kept and the owner is VERY kind. The kitchen is nice, the views are fantastic, but I don't think it was the best choice with a young (under 2) child. That was our own fault. You basically need to drive (and typically for at least 35 mins) to get to any notable town.

However, if you are into wine tours and you have adult friends you are entertaining - the place is perfect. It was just that for travellers with young children, I would rather be closer to Northern Tuscany (Siena, Florence, San Gimignano, Arezzo, etc) rather than be in the southern part of Tuscany as we found that it was much easier to be closer to a larger town than to be really out in the country.

Thank you very much for you kind review.

We are disappointed that you feel Southern Tuscany is a bit off the beaten track.
We are only 10 km from Pienza, 20 mins from Montalvino, 20 mins from Montulpicano and 40 mins from Siena.

We are also 10 mins from the famous thermal spa baths of Bagno Di Vignone.
The medieval village of Montisi is 2.5km from Podere Ampella and the village of San giovanni D'Asso is 2km with a local bakery, butcher, supermarket, café with newspapers and many restaurants to choose from.

Podere Ampella is excellent for children and 100% of our visitors in July and August
are families with children as the houses are large.

The pool is very large and the house's have private enclosed gardens designed with children's safety in mind.

Again thank you for your visit.

Regards

Paola

We stayed for a week in this beautiful development of Tuscan style holiday villas and regretted not having booked for another. The location is truly perfect with views out over the countrydide from all directions. Close to all amenities but away from hustle and bustle this is the perfect family destination. The house we stayed in was fitted to the highest standards with a well equipped kitchen, good sized living room, beautiful bathrooms and fully air conditioned. A large terrace for BBQ and a lovely swimming pool made this a holiday none of us will forget. About the best non hotel accommodation I have stayed in.

We spent a wonderful week in Villa Ampella la Torre. High spec accommodation with plenty of space and quality furnishings -the firm yet comfy mattress was just right for someone like me with a dodgy back! Views from all the bedrooms were wonderful particularly those from the tower bedroom.

The outside seating area had a view that took your breath away - perfect for early morning coffee or warm evenings with a glass of wine. Wildlife lovers will be delighted by views of bee eaters, hoopoes on the lawn, views of deer and the dusk song of the nightingales- amazing!
We spent our days visiting the hill top towns of Montalcino, Pienza , Montepulciano not forgetting Siena of course, We recommend a visit to La Foce a beautiful garden open for garden tours on Wednesday afternoons - close to Chianciano Terme. Take time to visit the abbey of Sant Antimo just south of Montalcino for its peaceful beauty and for those that like walking try a forest/river trail in the lower slopes of Mount Amiata.
This is the time of year when everything is lush and green, the poppy fields were just amazing as were the vast array of wild flowers. It is also a quiet time of year outside of the busy tourist season so the towns (apart from Siena) were relatively uncrowded.
We loved the nearby town of Montisi and highly recommend eating at Da Roberto (see our trip advisor review).
One week at Villa Ampella is not enough!

Does what it says on the label. Recently built, well appointed, on top of a hill with stunning views to all quarters from somewhere on the property. Great to sit out on the terrace or by the pool and soak up the sun and the tuscan landscape.

Minor niggles or would have been a five star:
- Mingy pillows, far too thin, had to borrow cushions from downstairs
- No sign of the usual local tourist info or guest comment book for a quick steer on local attractions
- Has internet on site but wireless does not work in all of the houses so you need to go down to the laundry room.
- If you are with friends rather than a family then the rooms vary in terms of en-suite, size and views so make sure that you understand what is on offer.

Other useful info.

Satnav location N 43 9.038 E 11 36.652 (Still empty fields on google maps!)

Eat first at Locanda del Castello in San Giovanni, you will want to go more than once.

Nearest horseriding is pieve a santi (local bagnacci caters to guests only)

Visit Montalcino

Best Nobile di Montepulchiano we tried was Avigonesi
Best Brunello di Montalcini we tried was Mastro Janni
Be careful, many wines from these two areas are living off the brand, are ridiculously overpriced and actually not very nice.

Overall, great location, great place to stay and would happily go back.

We stumbled across Podere Ampella on the internet, and like the previous reviewer were a little concerned in wiring over money - especially when i could not find the place on Google Earth (It appears that Google Earth image is pre 2008 when the place was built). So a little bit of a gamble, but it paid off.

We stayed in Casa di Sotto, and had access to a shared pool, which the children made full use of and made friends with other children.

Idea for day trips, both near and far:

- Florence ~ 1 hour on Auto Strada
- Siena ~ 40mins on normal road
- Stunning mountain top road to the hot water springs at Saturnia (2 hours)
- Montalcino, for the Brunello wine (1/2 hour)
- Montisi - 2km gem of a hill top village - not in the guidebooks - narrow streets - and da Robertos taverna (simple, not rushed home cooking - remember to book !).

Get up early and see the hot air balloon ...

Self catering food is available in small coop in San Giovanni D'Asso, but a bigger one is in Singaluna (near Autostarda - 20 minutes). Remember small shops are not open on a sunday, and closed 12-4:30 daily, so if you arrive on a Saturday get your provisions in early ;-)

Paola and her husband were very helpful to resolve minor issues.

There is a laundry open in the afternoon, which does have wifi access (if required).

Relaxing time, especially swimming in the pool as the sun sets over San Giovanni D'Asso

We scheduled our trip to Tuscany and Podere Ampella with really only a few reviews posted online, and none on Trip Advisor. Since you have to prepay some of the bill ahead of time ( in cash ), we were really nervous going over, not really having any idea what we were going to find.

What we found was stunning. Podere Ampella sits atop a hill in Tuscany looking down at the small village of San Giovanni D'Asso. We stayed in the Santa Catarina villa, which looked out over the gorgeous Val D'Orcia with no obstruction. We watched the sun set right over the mountains from our back patio each night. It, from what we saw, had the best view and setting of all of the villas there. Some had a view of the pool, others were closer to the road.

The interior was spotless when we arrived. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook there if you so choose. The bedrooms are quite large from what we saw, and there is ample space to just sit and relax as well in the other areas.

We stayed for two weeks and had a really difficult time leaving.

The location is really nice if you are interested in visiting the hill towns as well as the larger cities of Florence and Siena. Most of the hill towns were 30-45 minutes away, Siena is about an hour, and Florence is about an hour and 15 minutes.

I would highly recommend this to anyone considering this part of the country.
