“Worth a detour”
Reviewed 26 February 2014

There are many good restaurants in the area, and one of our go-to places was shut when we dropped by for lunch. That's how we discovered this little jewelI. The exterior is very unremarkable and we would have driven by, had the three small outside tables not been set for lunch with colourful plates and blankets. So we stopped and am I ever happy that we did. I spend a lot of time in this part of Tuscany, and after a few weeks of eating out, I pine for for something different than the typical starters of salumi and Pici con sugo. The food was fantastic. We had a puff pastry filled with asparagus and topped with a fried egg and truffle shavings, followed by Tagliatelle in a cream sauce and a thick pumpkin soup with pieces of bacon, ideal for warming us on a brisk winter day. I would kill for that soup recipe. For desert we shared marinated slices of juicy orange which was delicious. Service was prompt but our server could have been friendlier. Prices are in the middle-high end. I will certainly be back for dinner with friends, even though this means a 50km round trip. Lunch was that good.

“A must on a journey through Tuscany”
Reviewed 18 October 2013

A great place to stop and refuel in this truffle haven. Even the cheese has truffles mixed in. I'm ready to return.

“Unpretentious, great food. A gem!”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

We stayed in the village for a couple of weeks and ate here twice. They were two of the best meals we had- including much pricier, fancier establishments. The service was friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. Every mouthful was a treat!
If you are in San Giovanni and you are undecided whether to go to the Castella or here, choose the Osteria - you won't be disappointed!

“Its not all about truffles”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

Located right in the middle of San Giovanni village, the restaurant specializes in Truffles (San Giovanni is famous for them) but the menu is large (truffle dishes only make up about 1/4).
We had the mixed truffle starter and different pasta dishes. The pasta is homemade. It was good. Look out for the nice restaurant cat (its not on the menu :-). Kids decided they didnt like the ravioli with cod so the chef quickly cooked some homemade spagetti and tomato sauce which they liked. Overall it was a nice dining experience and should certainly be on your agenda if you are staying close to the village.

“Excellent small restaurant with genuine delicious food”
Reviewed 11 August 2013 via mobile

This is a lovely surprise - a small attractive restaurant in the unspoilt countryside of San Giovanni d'Asso. The food is quite delicious and reflects the patronne's interest in local and seasonal produce, mixed with a really unusual take on the tuscan traditional menu - truffles, pici, great meat - but also wonderful melon and mint and feta salad, home baked fennel seed bread - stupendous deserts. Reasonable prices and great wine list make this a really nice experience - recommended !!
