Reviewed 19 June 2012

We stayed in the Beach Club for 2 weeks early June. This was our second stay and it was as good as last time. We had a two bedroomed apartment with roof terrace.

The resort is very family orientated and our young children made many friends and we spoke to alot of people who we had met at the same time last year so obviously lots of people return yearly.

With regards to the apartment, I didn't notice the matress protectors last time but certainly did this time as they were so noisy every time we moved. I also agree that the pillows could be better. The apartments are cleaned daily which is great with small children as they trail sand etc in every evening.

If I had any issues it would be that the pool bar is quite expensive and the on site shop is a total rip off charging €3 for a bottle of water that costs less than a €1 in the supermarket. Normally we eat out alot however this year we cooked in the apartment a bit and there is a good supermarket called Pingo Doce in Almancil which has everything.

The restaurant is nice as is Maria's restaurant on the beach. Also, the restaurants in Vale Do Lobo are great and super for kids as they have music nightly for the children to dance to.

Overall this is a great resort, well suited to families and exceptional self catering accomodation. I hope we will return again next year.

We stayed in a 2 bed apartment in the Dunas area and have no complaints. Loved the huge apartment with big, clean rooms, two wonderful bathrooms (with Rituals products), beautiful ocean view, roof terrace, kitchen, livingroom...the apt was just great and the price not so bad. The pool area is nice and the restaurants are ok. The food could have been more interesting. We would love to come back one day!

The concept here is a little unusal, serviced (absent owner) apartments/ villas with hotel facilities added on via the club house - with the pool, bar, restaurant, and gym. Facilities provided by the resident management company.

We were in one of the 2 bedroom apartments over half term, and it served us well. The specification was high, with air con, good water pressure, with a fully equipped kitchen plus the daily tidying service. I agree with some of the comments regarding the beds. Not so much about the undersheets but the hardness of the mattress and the entry level pillows. Together this meant relatively poor sleep quality during much of my stay.On the 6th morning I hurt my back which had stiffened progressively during the week - please note Evy this is an important fact rather than 'nick picking',

Given the economic conditions in southern Europe I had been concerned that this could effect the stay but in many ways was not obvious. We were picked up from Faro airport by a very pleasant fellow who had only been with the resort for a few days and so our confidence in the service level increased.

We had dinner only twice in the clubhouse but the service and quality of food was perfectly pitched for a family. We often ate lunch at an adjacent restaurant outside the resort compound overlooking the beach - again decent uncomplicated food. Do not expect any food or drink bargains in this area however. Our family has eaten for less money in ski resorts in both Austria and Switzerland in the past couple of years.

The onsite shop was run by a very pleasant lady offering a few core basics if like us you travel car less, which proved useful. One of the better offerings being meat or fish for a home barby - which we would recommend at least once for fun.

In our experience the pool area was quite busy and we spent little time there. Our children are no longer toddlers and the resort does seemingly cater especially well for families. We headed to the beach on 'free' days but If you are a couple wishing for kid free time you may be better there rather than by the pool.

Dear Steve,
Thank you for taking the time to make a review of the Dunas Douradas Beach Club. We appreciate your comments and do take them seriously.
When it comes to hardness or softness of beds, we know that guests do have different preferences. For this reason, we are organizing to have extra mattress supports available to “soften” beds that guests consider to be too hard. We are also in the process of replacing pillows and will have improved the sleeping quality for your next stay.
I agree with you about the cost of eating out in the Algarve, so thank you for pointing out our BBQ option that many of our guests enjoy immensely.
However we would like to mention that our resort restaurant is better value for money than most in our area.
We look forward to seeing you again on your next visit to the Beach Club.
Yours faithfully,

We returned to Dunas Douradas in June after a fabulous holiday there last year (see my review). The place is as good as ever and it really is 5 star all the way. I could happily live there forever (if only I could afford an apartment!).

Like the previous reviewer I didn't like the plastic mattress protectors, I'm sure better quality ones are available. We also found the beds quite hard.

The other more major issue we had this time round was the daily cleaning service. Some days the cleaner didn't arrive to the apartment until 6/6.30 pm while we were cooking and/or showering. After being out all day it was dissappointing to come back to unmade beds, full bins and a cleaner under our feet (and us under hers I'm sure). When I checked out I planned to discuss this with the receptionist but he didn't ask if everything was ok so I asked for a comment card but he didn't understand me and gave the the resort business card, hence this review!

Dear Ailish1,
Thank you so much for your kind comments about the Dunas Douradas Beach Club. We hope to welcome you back again soon.
We have not had any comments about the mattress protectors before this spring, so there must be something that has happened to make them squeek. They are made of special impermeable material for sanitary reasons, actually costing more than standard mattress protectors. However, thank you for alerting the problems to us and we are looking at alternatives that will solve the issue.
Our cleaning department does plan to visit the apartments during the quiet time of the day between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., but this is not always possible. Additional staff have recently joined the team, so delays will occur less regularly.
Yours faithfully,

We had a wonderful time & thoroughly enjoyed ourselves so hope to return. Great location, beautiful apartments & pools. The food at the restaurant was good, the barbeque facilities were great & the resort never felt overly busy - lots of loungers etc available (often a problem at other hotels).
To nit pick 3 areas for improvement : 1 the plastic mattress protectors directly under the bottom sheets feel cheap & uncomfortable - squeaking unpleasantly with every move. These should go or be used more discreetly. 2 the hotel book is inaccurate / misleading - it mentioned concessionary loungers on the beach - apparently this simply means the hotel own some with no preferential rate for hotel guests (20 euros a day). The book also stated the hotel shop would be open until 6pm from 1st June, we discovered, to our detriment, it closed at 2pm. 3 A health & safety concern - my husband found a screw in the pool, my son & 2 other children got splinters from the wooden decking area by the pool & guests casually drank out of glasses & bottles around the pool - an accident waiting to happen?
These areas for improvement aside we had a great time & hope to return soon.

Dear Steggy2012,
Thank you so much for your kind evaluation and we are most pleased that you and your family had an enjoyable time. We pride ourselves on the quality of our resort and take the greatest steps to ensure our clients have a truly memorable holiday.
Thank you also for the “nit pick” areas you would like improved. We are always happy to receive comments from our clients and we will strive to ensure that such matters, however small, are dealt with correctly. As your stay with us was in the last week of May and first week of June, it straddled the change-over from winter to summer season and not all of the summer timetables and activities were running at the time. The shop is now open longer hours and we have a special concession discount for our guests using the beach which will be in force for the whole of the summer. Additionally, our life guard presence is enhanced during the summer which will pick up faster any potential dangers in the pool area.
We look forward to seeing you again on your next visit to the Beach Club.
Yours faithfully,

This is a rather special resort, for a great time... I'm pretty sure for the owners of the villas this is a terrible investment, but the resort is lovely, the management and staff very attentive, and the villas are big and very well decorated. And the hot tub... And the swimming pools.... And.... Great. Food prices were a little elevated tho.

We were only there for 2 days so did not venture out of the resort at all. It does feel like without a car for longer stays you'd be a bit stranded. However if lazing by the pool or sunbathing on the beach is your thing then it is a very up market resort option and the apartments were good value for what they are. The reception staff were very helpful and friendly. Even the poor rushed- off-their-feet bar and restaurant staff on the first night (we were there for a wedding the next day and all the guests were arriving late and hungry) were pleasant and helpful.

Our 2 bedroom apartment was very spacious and well equipped with an excellent kitchen for self catering. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms had fabulous showers. There is a fair bit of marble and a bit of bling to the decor - think European hotel lobby Our large terrace had a jacuzzi, BBQ and loungers. The resort has a decent restaurant - we ate there twice for lunch and dinner - and the bar area was a nice place to hang out. The pools, both indoor and outdoor, are well kept and outside has plenty of loungers.

The whole resort is set back from a very long white sandy beach which was lovely for a walk. There was a small shop for buying essentials (only open until 2pm though) which was handy. In May it felt a bit empty walking about the resort but it is such a big place it could take a lot to fill it up.

We enjoyed our short stay. Although that type of holiday and resort is probably not my thing for a whole week it was pleasant for a short break.

Room Tip: Most of the downstairs apartments have a jacuzzi, only some of the upstairs ones do, though obviousl...
