30 minutes well spent.....buy the guide leaflet - its a unique church, the tiles are superb, and the story of the church, and St Lawrence will keep the kids entertained for 30 minutes. Worth a detour.

“A Breathtaking Surprise in a Small Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014

Just off the main road through Amancil we found it. On the outside this white church with tile trim seemed lovely but not extraordinary. Visitors leaving whispered, "It's definitely worth the change to get inside". We paid our coins, entered the chapel and our jaws dropped. The interior is completely tiled in royal blue and white azulejo tiles, depicting the story of Sao Lourenco, and embellished with rich gold trims. The entire front of the church and alter are covered in gold in this surprisingly ornate, exquisite place. If you ever find yourself in the Algarve be sure to stop in the tiny hamlet of Almancil, to view the Church of Sao Lourenco, one of the few to survive the massive earthquake of 1755. We found it to be a moving and spiritual moment in our travels.

“What a stunning Church!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

We have visited this Church many times and I am ashamed to say we have never commented on it before, MEA CULPA!!!

If you ever venture to this area on holiday please take time to visit it, this is a most magnificent Church and we have seen many!

Votive candles are not available but as in many Church's lights replace candles, more eco friendly, no photo's inside but the Altar will always be in your mind's eye, unforgetable!!!

I'm not sure about wheelchair access

“Well worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2014

Amazed at the golden altar I've never seen anything like it before, neither have I visited a church so small. The walls and ceilings are covered with blue and white tiles depicting the story of Saint Lawrence. Cost of entry 2 euros per person (well worth it) buy the leaflet for 60cents if you don't know the full story before you visit, it helps you understand the scenes. Candles can be lit but are electric ones! It didn't feel the same as lighting a wax one.

“unexpected”

For such a small church in a small town this was really stunning. The rococo altar and sanctuary are exquisite . The tiled antechamber is lovely too and a peaceful place for a rest. The fee of 2 euro is well worth it.
