This was our 2nd stay at the Alion, having previously visited in June 2011. We stayed for 8 nights and had another wonderful time; so good that we did not want to leave!
On arrival at the hotel, quite late in the evening, we were informed that our park view room was unavailable and we were therefore upgraded to a side sea view room but just for 2 nights. We were informed we would then have to move to a park view room. The lady who checked us in could not have been more apologetic and she said that the reservations manager wanted to personally see us the following morning to also apologise, which she did. The staff did everything they could to assist us and sent a housekeeper and the porter to help us move rooms 2 days later. In fact, they did most of the packing and moving! We were also given a complimentary evening meal and allowed to keep our room until 6pm on our day of departure (at no extra charge) due to the inconvenience we suffered!
Most of the staff at the hotel remembered us from our previous visit and were so welcoming. They really are a credit to the hotel, as is the manager who was seen most days wandering around, talking to guests and ensuring everything was ok.
Our park view room was slightly smaller than the side sea view room but big enough for the 3 of us. The maid provided a really good service everyday and always left us with more than enough towels (pool towels included). You do not even really need to take many toiletries as the hotel provide miniatures and these are replenished on a daily basis.
The only downside to the park view rooms is the noise from the main road. This is only a problem if you have the patio door open. This isn’t the fault of the hotel, but the stupid riders of the numerous mopeds that travel up and down constantly and incessantly beep their horns!
Breakfast was as good as last year, with plenty of food and drink on offer, and we enjoyed sitting out on the terrace most mornings. Breakfast time was never busy (even though the hotel was full) and we thought it a brilliant idea that they had extended the time to 11am.
We stayed on a B&B basis and be warned, Cyprus is very expensive. We spent an absolute fortune on evening meals and drinks. Most evenings we took a taxi to Nissi Avenue (10 minute drive) and spent time in the Gardens Restaurant and bar where we know many of the staff. The food there is excellent. Beware of the rip-off taxi drivers though. They seem to charge between 8 and 10 euros wherever you go!! We often bartered with them and sometimes got the price down to 6 euros. They really are a greedy breed and not doing themselves any favours. They wonder why the buses are doing a roaring trade (one euro each). We did wait for the bus one evening; however, their timings are quite sporadic and when one did eventually come along, it was so packed it went straight past us!
As we were repeat guests at the hotel, we were invited to a ‘repeaters lunch’ the day before we left. We thought this was a really nice gesture and, again, we were made to feel very welcome!
We had glorious sunshine the whole 8 nights we were in Cyprus; the humidity did become a bit unbearable at times and the air con in the hotel was a welcome relief!
There are many bars and restaurants just outside of the hotel but it is situated far enough away from all the hustle and bustle of the busy nightlife down in the Square!
What really makes this hotel so special, is the little extras they provide, such as cold flannels and drinks on arrival, freezing cold flannels mid morning by the pool and slices of melon, and chocolates on the pillows at night!
To sum up, we had another wonderful time at the Alion and a special mention must go to Yiannis, Christos, Zenos and Klaudia who were just so friendly towards us. They really did ensure that we had a fantastic and memorable stay and really made us feel at home!
We have already booked to go back to the Alion in October and cannot wait. We managed to book a sea view room, and this really will be the icing on the cake!!!
Well done to all the team at the Alion - thank you for another brilliant holiday!
