Hotel Convento del Giraldo
Ranked #3 of 11 Hotels in Cuenca
Reviewed 26 July 2011

This hotel has been recently renovated so it smells very clean. The interior decoration is sophisticate and minimalist which is a lovely contrast to the exterior of the building which is set in the remains of an old convent. Therefore you can still see the wooden exposed beams and staircase with high dome ceilings as well as some of the large granite flooring in front.

The room we are given is a quiet one with a view towards the cathedral and the rest of convent (but not without some stairs in addition to the elevator to drag up our luggage). It is larger than most double rooms we have been to in Spain and it has a spacious bathroom. It also has a nice wooden designed headboard that gives the room character. We particularly love the automatic air-conditioning on and off switch which is linked to the opening of windows, we find it very eco-friendly and thoughtful.
By the way, this is probably one of the fastest free wi-fi internet service of hotels in Spain that we have ever stayed in.

The service of the hotel is decent and some of the staff particularly helpful (especially the night service shift). We are not too excited about the breakfast which could improve in variety and freshness (stale stuff is not appetizing nor are fruit baskets with nearly spoilt apples).

As for parking, the streets of Cuenca's old town is narrow and slopes up and down so finding a hotel with its own parking is not likely to be possible. Therefore we recommend you stay in a hotel near the private parking space which is roofed, secured and large enough for every type and size of car. Of course you will have to carry your luggage up hill down hill to your hotels but it's better than leaving it outside of town. So do ask the reception of your hotel and they will tell you how to find the nearest private parking space. For us it costed approx. 12 euros for one night.

We selected Hotel Convento for our stay in Cuenca initially for its location and its reviews on Tripadvisor for our three days stay in April. We quickly found that it was a very good choice. Our spacious room was in the back with a magnificent view looking across the gorge at the Cuenca Parador. It has a superb location in the old town which was fortuitous as we got to see the procession on Palm Sunday. The hotel is close to several good restaurants and bars with great tapas. Breakfast and the service were both excellent. A very good place to stay.

My mother and I senjoyed our night in the Hotel Convento del Giraldo. The room was very small and the furniture was very standard but the bed headboard was really beautiful. We had a great view across the ravine and our bathroom was roomy and beautifully decorated. The staff were welcoming and attentive. We had lunch in the hotel restaurant. It was very good. Our dishes were full of flavour and the service was great. We were very impressed by the tasteful renovation and the relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast was a buffet. There was a wide selection of local and international specialities. Unfortunately my boiled egg and the other 'hot food' was cold. When we checked out the receptionist wanted to charge my card although we had pre paid put the problem was quickly and efficiently sorted. If you are staying in Cuenca for a night I can recommend this top hotel and its restaurant.

We stayed for one night to explore the beautiful city of Cuenca. We were not disappointed in our choice but 2 things did spoil it a little. Our bedroom was overlooking the main thoroughfare which was narrow and cobbled. Although it was not what you would call busy there was a steady progression of cars up and down until about 2 a.m. This in itself wouldn't have mattered as there were double doors and windows for the room except for the extreme heat in the hotel. The heating/airconditioning equipment was not functioning in our room and we were therefore unable to adjust it. In order to cope we had to open the windows which then made it difficult to sleep with the aforementioned traffic. The hotel staff were unable to help - that was the temperature set!
The other niggle was that it cost us nearly 15 Euros to park overnight as there was no hotel parking or financial help for this. There was a free car park at the top of the town but it wasa very steep hill for carrying luggage and quite a trek. Otherwise both the hotel and Cuenca did not disappoint.

The conversion of the convent has been beautifully done. This is a modern and luxorious hotel with bags of old character features on show such as the reclaimed part of the carved wood ceilings now relocated as a bed headboard. It is perfectly placed in the old town which stunning views of the deep gorge behind. Be warned the streets of the old part of town are steep narrow and cobbled but the cathedral, hanging houses and plaza major are all close by. Parking is just along the street and incurs a charge. Breakfast was buffet style but think twice before sitting on the glass section of flooring with the vast ancient convent water tank below even if it is now dry! The staff were very helpful and friendly.

At the moment there are very noisy building works directly behind the hotel that start at 8AM on the dot and continue until 6PM, there are digging up the street with pneumatic machines that shake the hotel.
It is not possible to spend time in your room during the works due to the level of noise.

The hotel management will not advise you of the situation as most people would cancel their trip if they had the chance.

It is a real shame as the hotel is fantastic in all other respects.

My advice is to check with the hotel to ask if the works have finished or not, if not I do not advise you use this hotel.

In the heart of the old town of cuenca. We had a corner room so we had a view of the canyon and the cathedral, it was amazing. We loved this hotel, rooms were very large, enjoyed it. Location was great, close to the lookout spot of the canyon, and not to far from restaurants and shops.
