It's an attractive old hotel, with a nice dining courtyard. But it could be a lot better than it is and it's very over-priced for what you get - poor value. The room was small and with no air conditioning was uncomfortable in the heat. The reception could be a lot more friendly and helpful, but that doesn't seem to be a natural talent. The waiters also are blank and surly. The internet is infuriatingly slow and unreliable - and when reporting it down to reception just a shrug in response. The pool should be good - that was the main reason we stayed there, but the loungers are so old and uncomfortable you end up with a bad back. At the weekend it was just a local public pool with the loungers taken by large family groups, with the bar/restaurant area likewise taken over by large noisy groups with kids. Maybe ok for a one night stay but sounds and looks a lot better than the reality.

The good things were the lovely location, just outside Cuenca, quiet and peaceful, with attractive courtyard for a drink. The swimming pool was closed as out of season, but would be large and a great place to sunbathe around. Room was clean and comfy, so it was fine for an overnight stay, taking in Cuence on route.
The bad things were the unhelpful and downright surly and rude staff (everyone we had contact with was short tempered and even made serving a beer seem an outrageous request). Food was not great in the restaurant, but that could have been our poor choice. As no-one spoke any English and certainly weren't prepared to help us out with our limited Spanish it was pure guesswork! The whole place seemed tired and had seen better days, although that could be because we early in the season? But our room was dark and full of gloomy furniture, and a tiny TV on the wall, so far from the bed it would have been impossible to watch, had we wanted to.

We stayed for only one night and the days were rainy, not allowing to use outdoor facilities, like swiming pool or tennis courts. Nevertheless the rooms are very big and well recovered, perfect if you have two teenagers and want some privacy. Wonderful ambiance. It's a good place to stay if you want to visit not only historical Cuenca but also the surroundings and the enchanted city. It's away from Cuenca but there are a lot of signs even in the city, it's easy to drive and along the way pay attention to the impressive rock formations on the side of the road.

A friendly reception, nice building, nice decoration, just clean bedroom with small bathroom. The food was very good and people friendly, nice spanish modern food for slightly over average price, some places were you can try to relaxe at the same time that children shout and run, the snooker table was nice not so the snooker cues. fine place near Cuenca, to have breakfast an relax during night, nice views from some rooms, peacefull and quiet. I will repeat

After a spectacular drive to the hotel we were looking forward to somethig special. From the outside the hotel looks very nice however we were rather disappointed. We were greeted at reception by a rather offhand man who obviously wanted to be doing something else. We found our room which was Ok apart from the hole in the bathroom wall . A walk around the gardens should have been beautiful but again disappointed with piles of dirty plastic chairs and a general air of neglect. The staff in the bar were surly to the point of rudeness and their idea of clearing tables was to sweep the rubbish on to the floor. Dinner did not start at 8-30 as advertised and when we asked when it would start we were told to wait and then plunged into darkness and left to find our way out of the room. The only redeeming feature was breakfast which was very good

Nice outdoor patio, room basic but pleasant, location a short drive from old city. Found room/hotel a little musty, which is a problem for me.

Cueva Del Fraile is located on the Buenache Rd outside Cuenca after the most spectacular drive. It is a suberb location and building which could, with a bit more thought about the lighting and other guest facilities could be absolutely magnificent!

It is great value for money and the staff are friendly and helpful but you will need at least some Spanish as no English is spoken.

Ideal for exploring the incredible city of Cuenca with it's hanging houses, spectacular gorge, paradors, cathedral, plaza major and tourist 'train'!

Interestingly, although we didn't hear one word of English spoken in the hotel or the town during our 48 hour weekend stay, I was able to buy a Sunday Telegraph in the tiny Tabac off the main square.
