We loved our very short visit, only one night but we had mainly come to see the hanging houses of Cuenca which had been a dream of mine for 20 years. Unfortunately when we arrived here we discovered that the houses were covered up and closed for renovation! However, the historic hotel didn't disappoint and our room was delightful, - in keeping with the period the hotel was built and twith a small balcony overllong the gorge. Our adult daughter's room was small (and cheap) and she enjoyed this spartan room which echoed its monastic past. The hotel is a bit like the town, surprises around each corner and I got lost in the maze of corridors a couple of times. The receptionist spoke very little English but called on the Canadian/Spanish owners if necessary.

Room Tip: Choose a room with balcony and views over the gorge.

My family and I stayed here in June 2011. The location is terrific -- right in the middle of the Old Town -- and the views are incredible, You actually look across the ravine at the Parador and the footbridge into town. The building is over 400 years old and full of character. My son had to duck to pass through the doorways, which we thought was fun, and we were awakened in the morning by roosters crowing. (No other noise.) We had two rooms with private baths, and they were both very clean and comfortable. Breakfasts were nice, too. The only challenge was finding the hotel by car. Do NOT try to drive to the door, as your car may not fit up the street! Instead, you should unload your bags in front of the Cathedral and walk up the hill from there, or drive all the way to the free parking lot at the top of the hill, then walk down to the hotel.

We stayed here for two nights after 3 weeks of travelling in Spain with the hope to really relax. The room was exactly as indicated with superb views of the parador. I'm not sure what other views are like but I imagine the experience would be compromised without the view. (or better a balcony). The service was ok but I wouldn't say exceptional. All staff will greet you which is nice. Being a English speaker, I don't know if the service would have been better if we spoke Spanish. Breakfast for us was free and a good spread. Restaurant was nice but again, we were disappointed that we booked a table, (and as was dining early was the only people there) was told to sit at the ugliest part of the terrace but others who didn't book and came after us were able to take the best seats. It felt a bit stink really. No wifi on site - and difficult to get. Apparently it is available at the Museo of Science but they kept saying it was closed. Overall worth staying. BUT careful with the laundry, we were shocked when we recieved a bill for 27 euro for a bag of laundry. At other places we might pay 10 Euro for a bag...

Room Tip: Ensure your room is with a view or balcony

Hi there Atineb and Co.....firstly we thank you for having chosen Cuenca and the Posada de San Jose as the final destination of your Spain tour...coming from so far away we are sure that the last days (hours) were relaxing for you and prepared you for the long trip home ....would like to clear up the dinner on the terrace reservation so that there are no hard feelings...having reserved upon arrival for an early dinner there were unfortunately other tables already booked...as you saw, our terrace only has a total of 5 small tables, 3 of which were to be put together to make a large table already reserved......the previous reservations were for 9.30/10.00 so as to avoid having you to hurry your dinner or changing tables before finishing, the waitress considered it was wiser to seat you on the lower level of the terrace...there were other tables inside the dining room with the view and the windows open but the terrace is definately more attractive!! . As for the laundry.....we do not have small domestic machines so we have to put the laundry in separate loads in the industrial ones we have....this hopefully will justify our prices which are per garment...we would love to have wi.fi but the ancient (thick) walls require a very complex instalation...hopefully one day...there is also wifi available in a cafeteria just down from us on the parellel San Pedro Street...it was a pleasure to have had you to stay with us and we sincerely hope to see you again some time...saludos Jennifer Morter (Owner-Manager since 1983)

We stayed 2 nights this small hotel which was originally the choir school for the nearby cathederal. The location is perfect, being just off the main old square near the cathederal, with bars and resturants nearby The 17th centuary building is very original and on several levels overlooking the famous gorge. We had a large clean double room with bathroom, and a balcony with wonderful views. The room was furnished with antiques and was very comfortable. The bathroom was a good size with shower over the bath. The only downside was no bar fridge, coffee making facilities or wifi. There is a resturant on the lower level with good food and service, and reasonable prices. Staff at reception are helpfull. The hotel has no car parking, but there is a secure multi-story carpark nearby on Calle de San Pedro. If you need to catch up with your email there is a free wifi cafe in Hotel Giraldo, also nearby on San Pedro.
A brilliant place to stay, remember to ask for a room with a view!

Brilliant - upgraded to the suite, and well worth it for the views! Parked up the motor bikes, booked into the hotel, but hadn't realised it was one of the hanging houses.

I can't believe there is another hotel with a better view than this one. It looks out over the whole gorge and definitely had better views than the Parador. We also sampled food elsewhere, but in the end we decided the best food was actually in our hotel's restaurant, it was very good and not too expensive, so we ended up eating here most nights. The hotel is quaint and has lots of character and the decor of the whole hotel is keeping in with the age and history of the building (an old college founded by the Bishop of the Cathedral next door). I wouldn't even consider staying in another hotel when I return, I can't imagine there is a better hotel than this.

Stayed one night whilst driving south. Posada is not so easy to find, tucked up a little alley from the main street.
We had a double room overlooking the gorge, which was well appointed and spotlessly clean. Check-in staff were helpful and friendly.
Dinner that evening was uncomplicated and reasonably priced with a selection of local produce. Views from the restaurant are superb - looking over the gorge and the well illuminated parador below.
Very happy to recommend this establishment.
