P. de San Jose is a charming old world hostal located in the old section of Cuenca, Spain. It sits on the edge of a gorge with fantastic views up and down the valley. Rooms vary from spartan to sumptuous. It is better to call to inquire about available rooms to obtain a more detailed description than is available on the internet. We started out in a triple room with 3 beds, a sink, little lighting and shared toilet/bath facilities for 44 Euros. Altho fully booked, we asked to be moved if a more comfortable room became available, so on the second nite we moved to a larger charming front room with a view, private bath and more comfortable furnishings for 80 E. A much larger luxurious suite became available so for the third nite we enjoyed one of the best rooms in the house for 123 E. P. dSJ has a dining room but we didn't eat in since we were involved in a wedding elsewhere in town. Breakfast not included for 9 E. Very friendly and helpful staff with some English. Free parking nearby. A quite location about 100 meters from the Plaza Mayor with several restaurants and tapa bars. A 6-7 minute walk to the footbridge that crosses the gorge. A charming venue in the quaint city of Cuenca.

Wow, what to say about a place so amazing...

We stumbled across the hotel and were quite impressed with the amenities and price, unaware of its location other than being in Cuenca. The staff was incredibly helpful upon arrival and without request, gave us the best room in the hotel. Number 24 is the number one requested room on site and it wasn't hard to figure out why.

The classic and rustic charm of the lobby/sitting room interior is fantastic and the simplistic yet astounding room was top notch. Not only did we have comfortable, warm beds, we had an attached sitting area with balcony that overlooked the gorge, other hanging houses and the Parador across the way. Breakfast was an additional €7, but with the selection given, it was well worth it.

The location is prime for the old city, near to the cathedral, squares and fine dining. It's a quick taxi or bus ride down into the newer part of Cuenca and a gorgeous 20 minute walk with fantastic views of the overall downtown area.

Definitely an A+ hotel. I would recommend it to anyone interested in a slightly higher class stay without much splurging in the price. Even if you don't get Number 24, it's a worthwhile home away from home.

This Inn is a very special place in the very special town of Cuenca. We loved it! There are different levels of rooms to be had depending what you are looking for. We had a double room with full bath and a view. Ask for a room with a bathroom. As for the view...it was outstanding as this hotel hangs onto the edge of a cliff and we overlooked the gorge/valley from our balcony. This old part of town was a bit hard to find and we had to ask for directions a couple of times. The streets are extremely narrow so you better have a small compact car in order to drive to the Inn. The front staff were very friendly and helpful. Jennifer, the owner, speaks English and was full of great information. Her husband only speaks Spanish. Breakfast was good and again the view was incredible from the dining room. We would highly recommend this Posada!

We stayed here for a couple of nights and fell in love with the place.
Our room was warm and welcoming (Cuenca is high up and can get very cold!). The bathroom was modern and clean.
The hotel was built in the 1600's and seems to cling to the side of the ravine. The hotel's corridors are a little like a maze, with pleasant surprises around each corner. There are little seating areas, balconies with fantastic views and a garden also with fantastic views.
Breakfast was a continental buffet type with a pots of coffee and hot milk served at the table.
We were puzzled by other reviews as we found the staff (in the restaurant and at reception) very friendly and helpful.

I stayed here after reading the recommendations below and it didn't disappoint. I loved the charm and character of this place, which must
rank of one of the best stop-overs in 30 years of travelling. Rooms are clean and cosy and, whilst lovers of mod-cons like tvs and mini-bars won't like it here, to me this is yet another added attraction. The view from the balconies are simply stunning, making this place one that you won't wish to leave despite the many delights of Cuenca itself. Yes it's a bit hard to find at first but once you're there it's well worth the effort, and whilst also the service is certainly slow, everything here is at 16th-century pace, and I for one was in no hurry to do anything but savour the many pleasures afforded by this hotel. Ideal for a romantic weekend.

This hotel was very quaint. It is an old monastery or nunnery, and maintains the charm from that time. One of our rooms had a porch/terrace that overlooked the valley - the view was beautiful! They had a very good breakfast (especially by Spanish standards). The only bad thing was that we had to carry our luggage up/down the stairs because the nuns/monks obviously didn't have elevators, but this is not unusual for many of the hotels where I stayed in Spain. Overall, I loved this place, and would definitely go back again!
