So much to see in Ancient Rome. Why so many people queue for ages and don't book online escapes me. Go early if you are able to. A guide is highly recommended because signage and interpretation options are very poor.

we visited Rome for the first time in March of 2017 and hired Sonia for two days, day one was a tour of the Vatican and we were so glad we had hired her. I think we would have been completely lost. She was very knowledgeable about history , really brought it all to life with background and stories on the architecture and art. She really streamlined everything for us to make sure we saw all the highlights in the one day we had at the Vatican. When we met at the Vatican Museum there were a ton of people, she walked us right passed the lines and straight into the building bi passed everyone.
Day 2 was the Colosseum, palatine hill and the Forum and again without Sonia it all would have been a bunch of old rocks and buildings we would have had no idea what everything was she really brought it all to life. I would highly recommend Sonia if you are traveling to Rome
As the saying goes...When in Rome, do as the Romans. Therefore, a visit to the Ancient city was in store. We visited the Coliseum, Forum, Circus Maximus, and Palatine Hills and trod where many historical leaders had walked before. Truly an experience not to be missed.
This was my first holiday to Rome and I had read up and checked out the wonderful sites that awaited me and my twin brother and with a city with well over two thousand years of history I expected to find some amazing sites but what awaited was simply breathtaking.
The bus ride in from the airport was impressive enough with some fantastic ruins spotted along the way but the Ancient Rome was fabulous.
The Colosseum alone was simply the most stunning building I have ever seen and to walk in the footsteps of were so much world history originated was fantastic.
The area around the Colosseum is litered with ruins of all types from old temples, viaduct, archway, columns, huge Obelisks and dwellings,it's awesome but all over Rome you will find so much more than the Colosseum such as the Pantheon,Roman Forum and innumerable other beautiful sites that you will find just exploring this amazing city and as an added bonus you have the armed forces out in every part of the city keeping its citizens and tourists safe .
No visit to Rome would be complete without a visit to the area known as Ancient Rome and if your planning a visit to the eternal city I highly recommend you visit here.
I highly recommend you see the amazing ancient treasures of Rome, but use a reputable company such as Walks of Italy. The guides are well educated and will point out to you interesting facts. Also, being on a guided tour means an air conditioned van to get you around and less time spent figuring out how to get from point A to point B. The ancient gems I saw with WoI included the Palentine and Aventine Hills, chariot race track, Knights of Malta, Jewish ghetto, and much more.
I'm quite sure that most of our monuments won't last as long as those of ancient Rome. The whole centre of Rome is littered with bits and pieces of ancient buildings. Fascinating.
