“Quirky and Very Fun”

Whittaker's Musical Museum
Ranked #4 of 7 things to do in Oneroa
Attraction details

Saw this in my Rough Guide and just had to give it a go. The museum is a relatively haphazard collection of mainly keyboard instruments in one large room.

The best thing about it, though, is that visitors are not only permitted but positively encouraged to play the instruments. Highlight for my Kiwi fiancee & little boy was the player piano like the one in her grandmother's house. The staff were surprised that she knew how to work it.

The Small Boy loved all of the exhibits, although had most fun with a huge glockenspiel while I was most taken by an ornate piano in ebony & silver with Egyptian styling & fascinated by the ship piano which folded up to save space & prevent damage. The volunteer staff were also somewhat surprised when I managed to get two exhibits going.

We would have stayed a lot longer had the Boy not become a bit restive. Certainly there could be hours of fun to be had having a pluck on a zither here or a play on a harpsichord there.

This is not a museum which tries to push any kind of interpretation on the visitor or patronise in any way. It's instruments in a room, each with a short description, and some friendly and helpful staff to assist if the visitor wants.

It appeared admission was free, although donations are welcome. For the time we spent here I left a generous one, it was well worth every cent!
