My girlfriend and I stayed here for 1 night and when we checked in everything seemed ok. Our private room was clean and pretty much what we expected. We spent the whole day exploring the island and when we came back we spent most of our time in our room relaxing and the place was quiet, but not for long. After dinner the TV in the lounge room was turned on full blast and and at first we thought a fight broke out but it was just the very loud movie being watched. The kitchen was dirty and I couldn't find a clean cup anywhere. In the morning I guess I was in the shower a little too long (5-7 mins tops) and the male host, forgot his name, run up the stairs and pounded on the door very violently. He proceed to tell me to [--] off as well as a few other choice words and that I needed to get out of there ASAP. After that we left immediately and didn't look back. We both work in hospitality and I have to say that was the worst attitude I have ever seen. Cute hostel but definitely not worth it.

Hekerua Lodge is a stylish, fresh, whitewashed, floorboarded beachhouse that we really enjoyed staying in on Waiheke Island on our recent NZ holiday. We were 2 fifty year old friends, travelling with 2 seventeen year old boys, and we all really prefer the hostelling experience to anonymity of hotels. TV is rarely turned on at Hekerua, there is too much interesting conversation to be had. Everynight we had a good laugh round the big table on the deck. Chefs from a couple of the Vineyard restaurants were staying and regularly cooking dinner, charging $10 per person for an amazing meal. Everyone was very welcoming, and the spa and pool were put to good use. Regardless of age we all fitted in and had a great time.We are home 4 days at the time of writing, hi to all of the lovely people we met at Hekerua, and thanks for a great stay.

My partner and I had decided to stay in Hekerua Lodge for 2 nights in December and from the reviews and pictures, it seemed like the perfect retreat. Rock Pool, decking, lovely spacious room and most of all QUIET.
My initial thought was that it was grubby, but I have never stayed in a hostel before and people said this was to be expected.
We spent all day around the island so we were glad to come back and get to our room (which was airy and fine, although no curtains!!!) we were not able to sleep much at all as the other guests were having a party and the whole lodge echoes so much that every door shutting and every laughter seems to be like a bomb going off, this really pee'd us off as there was no consideration for other guests, and this went on till 3am. The second night was exactly the same too.
The kitchen was filthy and seemed dark and dingy. Not sure if I am just being picky or just not that experienced with hostel living. Think next time (if we do stay in one) we'll go for the bigger hostels as then I dont think you'd hear the noise too much!
