I rated Cable Bay last time as very good but need to upgrade to excellent having now experienced most of the other winery restaurants on the island. Had lunch here with friends and all left equally impressed. Consistently impeccable food, not overly fussed with (aka Mudbrick). Just beautifully prepared and delivered. Service was great. Cable Bay wine selection excellent. Its a shame the Reserve Syrah is so expensive in the restaurant - would be nice to treat diners with a more accessible price as it is steps ahead of their standard Syrah.

Cable Bay is a must while in Waiheke. The service was attentive. The food is excellent. I had the short rib and WOW...Yummy!!! The wine selection is wonderful as well. I love the fireplace it was cold while we visited. After dinner my husband and I took our wine to the fireplace very cozy.

There is a rule for actors never to perform with children or animals. A corresponding one could be never to eat at restaurants with spectacular views. Those restaurants never have to do very much to please the resident (or near resident) Auckland food reviewers and assorted glitterati. Some places get awards for reasons that escape me so I must have been on a bad hair day.
The duck liver pate was a starter by price but an amuse gueule by size. The pork belly and scallops were fine and reasonably priced. The mains at $45 without sides were varied. The pork loin was judged boring but the beef was good. The duck breast was like the curate's egg - parts of it were rare and parts were raw.
The wines were mainly Waiheke for obvious reasons and were solid reds. The Five Hills are robust with merlot and malbec and even the 6% Cabernet franc comes through distinctly. The tannins probably need five or more years to smooth out the wine. They certainly need robust food to go with them.
The atmosphere was fun at lunch (or noisy with children running everywhere). The service was good with some waiters and not with others..

One of the best vineyards I'v ever been. Excellent vine + tasty sea food + impressive sea view. You can get a car or bike or even walk to Cable bay vineyard - anyway it'll be a fun and not far from ferry terminal. Cable Bay is just 35 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland. The Fuller's Ferry to Waiheke departs from Pier 2 at the Main Ferry Building. Once you arrive at Waiheke, taxis meet all ferry sailings and wait at a taxi rank next to the terminal. You are a 2-minute ride away from Cable Bay Vineyards – just mention the name and they know where to go. Cable Bay Vineyards could best be described as an innovative traditionalist. They use traditional winemaking and viticultural techniques in order to ensure they wines best express the unique attributes of their individual vineyard sites.

We had a friend form Australia staying, and wanted to take him to somewhere special with great views of Aucland and the gulf. Cable Bay fitted perfectly, and the experience was first rate right from the warm welcome at the front door.
My entree of scallops and pork belly was divine, and the duck breast also full of flavour. My wifes requests for some special dietary needs were attended to happily and professionally and without fuss. The 2010 reserve syrah was out of this world!
The desserts had a bit too much going on, on the plate and thus flavours and textures clashed too much. Otherwise I would have given 5 stars.
A lovely lunch of a high standard, with impeccable friendly service.
