On a little, isolated island in paradise, there is a hidden secret - Cable Bay Vineyards and Restaurant. It is worth going there just for the view. I was fortunate to be there when New Zealand artist Paul Dibble had a display of brilliant bronze sculptures set up, one of which is still there, and this too is worth the visit. The wine bar is lovely to sit and sip on fine local wines, and unwind, before being waited on in perhaps New Zealand's best Silver Service restaurant. The food is superb, the staff lovely, and the setting is simply to die for. Go there!

While in Auckland, we took a day trip to Waiheke Island. One of our first stops was lunch at Cable Bay.

Usually, places with great views have mediocre food but this place is definitely the exception to the rule. The food was excellent though you do pay the price for it. We had oysters for an appetizer and they were amazingly fresh - our server told us that they were caught just that morning.

I had the Hawk Bay lamb which was cooked to perfection while other members of my family enjoyed the catch of the day and the beef short ribs.

The service was attentive and excellent (probably helps that we were one of only two groups there braving the rainy weather). However, once the rain passed we were treated to a truly glorious view of the bay and the view of Auckland from our table.

NB:
- They charge for the bread so lay off ordering extra if you don't want to pay
- If you dine at the restaurant, you get a free wine tasting. I suggest going for the wine tasting first in order to decide which wine you would like to drink with your lunch / dinner.

Great location and very nice place to eat. Not the cheapest place to eat on the island but if you want the best then this it. A little tip. Make sure you arrive 30 min prior to sunset.

There is a separate place down stairs called the wine library which can seat 12 people. Now this place is amazing. It has its own cellar and its very dark, you walk down some tight concrete stairs then you come to your own private dark rich setting. Great place.

My husband and I are from nearby Auckland and were getting away to Waiheke for a 24 hr stint to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We dined at 3 restaurants within that time, and although the other 2 were great, Cable bay (our last stop for lunch) was by far the best overall experience. The service was excellent, the complimentary (and thier own) olive oil and warm bread was a pleasant surprise (seems to be becoming a thing of the past in alot of fine dining restaurants) the wine list was excellent my favorite (of all NZ rose's that I've tried and I've tried alot) is the Rose, exceptional.
The food was sublime, I had the tagliatelle with king prawns and crab, to die for is all I can say. On the otherside from the restaurant was the wine bar and snack menu (perfect we thought to bring the kids so they can enjoy a bowl of fries and run around on the expansive front lawn looking over towards the sea) while we sample more of their spledid wine. To the side of the bar was the tasting room ($7 or free when dining) a great experience.
