“The cottage is very comfortable with great owners next door”
Reviewed 2 June 2017 for a stay in May 2017

Hidden down the tiny roads of the Wye Valley the cottage is situated in the owners 12 acres which descend from just above their house with the cottage next door, down almost to the river. The area is heavily wooded with deer and woodland birds all around and in the gardens. The nearby town of Monmouth is of great interest with the only surviving medieval gatehouse bridge in the UK, and in the surrounding area there are wonderful gardens and castles - particularly Chepstow. For the walking enthusiasts, the Wye Valley walk is just down the road with a footbridge over the river next door to an excellent pub, and there are woodland footpaths close to the cottage.

“A friendly welcome in a beautiful setting.”
Reviewed 9 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Robin's barn is a lovely cottage which was perfect for our stay. Jane and family made us feel very welcome and pointed out a number of local walks and other features, including a herd of wild deer grazing in the garden.

We mostly travelled west from Penalt each day to explore some of the history of South East Wales but also found some interesting places near by. For music fans the museum in Monmouth has a fascinating section about the Rockfield recording studios which are local. Tintern and its abbey are also just a few miles away with lovely river-side walks.

Further afield we found lots of interest in Blaenaven and Merthyr but our favourite location was a walk along the beautiful canal at Govilon.

Liked best: The location, the quiet and the views.
Liked least: Wifi was very slow but that's to be expected in such a rural setting. Just disconnect for a while!

“Idyllic setting”

We had a weeks family holiday here. The cottage is comfortable for 3 people with 2 two-seater sofas and table/chairs in the open plan lounge/dining/kitchen area. The kitchen is a little dated and it would help if there were a few more cooking items (e.g. a frying pan, microwable dishes). The spiral staircase is a novelty but not for the faint-hearted (or less mobile) but we knew this before we booked. There is a nice double room with lots of storage, small single room with limited storage and a nice, clean, modern bathroom. The log burner is Fab but there are good heaters in each room. The setting is off the main roads, down little lanes so is very quiet although there are neighbours close by. The valley views are lovely and there are numerous walks close by (lots of info in the cottage); we did one through forest and river on our first day! There is a pub in the village but we didn't try this. Monmouth is the closest town and is lovely for shopping etc. Great base to explore from.

“Great place for walking and relaxing”

It’s safe to say that we feel pretty comfortable in recommending this wonderful little cottage. At the end of a long road it’s right in the heart of the Wye Valley and, as the pictures tell you, over looks the valley itself, with a bubbly-perfect patio to enjoy it from. Although next to the owners’ house, the owners are extremely welcoming and informal so you certainly get a real sense of privacy and solitude. The cottage itself is simple with no frills to speak of but it’s very cosy and comforting and impossible not just to relax and enjoy the sounds of the countryside. For us though, what really made it special was the ability just to put your boots on, leave the front door and find yourself in stunning countryside with plenty of fantastic walks beckoning you to explore. What’s more, Jane has put together a comprehensive selection of walks and has put a great deal of thought and effort into their descriptions so you can more or less head off for 3-5 mile walks without even taking a map. It’s this kind of attention to detail that get Robins Nest the five stars, that and the wonderful setting.

“Peaceful and idyllic”
Reviewed 27 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We may not have had the best of weather, but the cottage itself was cosy and well equipped, in a lovely area with stunning views. Dog-friendly and within easy reach of Monmouth and many local beauty spots (Symonds Yat, Forest of Dean, Tintern Abbey etc) all rich in wildlife. Owners Jane and Tim are friendly and obliging.
