We stayed in the Hotel Chateau de Palaja. The restaurant belongs to the hotel, but is separated. So, positively, it has the character of a hotel restaurant.
The service is excellent. The food the same. We had a wonderful and perfect dinner there. Prices are absolutely fine for this restaurant.

Thank Schneido

This place is awesome. Best parts:
* Outdoor seating in beautiful garden. Lots of room between tables.
* Family place run by three brothers. Between them, one speaks your language.
* Talented chef. His cassoulet is great, asparagus salad with serrano ham delicious, perfect foix gras terrine. The youngest brother made killer crepes suzette table side.
* I loved the wine list. Mostly from vineyards next door, it is all good and very reasonably priced. You can't find a 100E bottle, just 10 different 20E bottles that should be 50E.
* The wine is representative of the overall value. If there were ten stars for a good deal they would get it.
Tip for American diners: to these guys, letting you sit forever without bothering you for the bill is being polite and considerate. If you want the check, stick your head inside and ask. They'll come running with it.

Ok, so we're from Perth where a glass of wine costs upwards of AUD$10..when we see decent glasses of wine coming in at three euros a go, we get excited. I'll start with the end ie the bill because it was such a pleasant surprise - just 63 euros for two people, who left well and truly sated and happy.

This lovely restaurant is situated immediately next to Chateau de Palaja, where we were staying. The service was very good indeed - wonderfully friendly and helpful yet completely non intrusive. For those that struggle with the French language, the waiters translated everything item by item with extreme patience and also advised on dietary needs eg what has lactose etc. To some of us, this really matters!

The ambience is bang on and the temperature perfect. To start with, a glass of wine for him and the usual water for me. Lightly toasted grainy bread with a delicious tapenade arrived followed by a shared starter of a charcuterie platter, together with a generous serving of breads (which kept coming the entire meal - a seemingly endless supply!). The platter comprised a range of salamis, cold meats and a wonderful pate together with a side salad - a great starter. Mains were duck for him (which he raved about), and a steak for me cooked on the rare side of medium rare on request and delivered to me exactly as ordered - fantastic. I skipped out on the mushroom sauce that accompanied the dish due to the lactose but had the side salad and indulged in the fries, or 'chips' depending on where you hail from - which were fantastic (as chips go). Completely full, we skipped out on dessert but rest assured there are plenty to choose from and at least one that can be rendered lactose free..and that isn't fruit salad either! Coffee was also skipped and we paid and headed the few metres back to our room. All up, my partner had three glasses of a lovely wine (house wine) and as before, the bill was just over the 60 euro mark. Superb on value alone and with the added bonus that the food quality was very good.

We differed slightly on how good - my partner rated this up there with the best while I was slightly more conservative, feeling that it fell short of the amazing meal we'd had in Creissels near Millau the night before. So, apparently the duck here is the dish to have here! A lovely part of the world and a great meal - recommended.

We ate here in October, inside obviously as it was a bit chilly outside, even for Englishmen. The menu is a little limited, made worse by being too late for the fish of the day, but this was made up for by a superb Salmon dish.

Surroundings are very elegant but comfortable, you are not overawed as in some upmarket restaurants, service was excellent but unobtrusive, and the food was well worth the 40 minute drive from Limoux.

Overall it was a very enjoyable evening, made even more so when we were presented with the bill, which for 4 was €185, including aperitif, three course meal and wine.

We will return.

We stayed at the Chateau next door and ate here one night. We both chose the fish of the day main, which turned out to be a rather good fish pie (but it was not called that) and just what we needed. Wine recommendation was smack on and crepes suzette and chocolate fondant desserts were both delicious. Good value.
