Loved the hike! Great view, fun terrain and difficult enough to work up a good sweat. Beautiful scenery. Pretty steep uphill hike with lots of damp/rainy conditions but that made it fun and challenging for us.

This was our favorite hike on Maui- and we did a *lot* of hikes (including Pipiwai Trail, Sliding Sands at Haleakala, Iao Valley). This is a rain forest- so prepare for damp, wet, light rain. If that bothers you or you are worried about potentially slippery, un-even ground, also a very steep incline, this is not the hike for you. But if those things do not bother you, and you want amazing views, a hike up into the clouds, then go for it!

We are a very fit family, but we did have two young children with us, ages 4 and 6, so that made things a little more difficult. But my 6-year old did the entire hike on his own. The 4 year old needed a piggy back ride off and on.

Also, keep in mind that there are several switchbacks along the trail, including one at the very start of the trail- it almost looks as though the trail is "closed" but it is just a way of keeping cattle and livestock out.

Loved this hike!

I hiked this trail today beginning about 930am. It was a foggy day and the previous several days have been rainy. Under these conditions the trail was very slippery and unsuitable for anyone not moderately fit. Views were minimal through the fog all the way to the top.

It rained most of the day so we figured we would hike while it was cool. On our way up the trail a local told us to be careful of flash floods and to turn around if it started raining to hard. We got about half way before we turned because of the rain. We did see a tiny little frog the size of a thumb tack on the hike. He was so small I first thought it was a jumping spider. Even with the rain and fog it was still an amazing hike. Wish we could have gone the whole way.

We had a couple of hours before needing to leave for the airport and so headed here, within 30 minutes of the town. It's about 3 to 4 hours round trip but we had only 2 so got halfway, but it was worhtwhile. You get views of the hills plunging to the sea, waterfalls plunging down the hills in the distance, walks though forest, and see the backside of the Iao park, which is an incredible site. The trail starts at about 1000 ft elevation, which is a nice head start. The paved path at the start is steep, but the dirt trail after that is much less so. It's muddy, so use a stick, and at points the path is a little frightening, with near vertical drops along it. If you go slow there, you'll be safe. There weren't too many people. A great hike. Bring you own water as there is none.
