“A Birder's Paradise in the Darien”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2014

I was lucky to be with one of the first birding groups to stay for a week at the newest lodge in the Canopy Family, Canopy Camp. I went with my favorite bird tour group, Ventures Birding. There were only 5 of us on the tour and we had the place to ourselves. The camp can accommodate 16 people total (2 to a tent). The 8 tents are luxury safari style on elevated platforms with teak floors and private bathrooms with showers open to the sky (cold water only, but I understand that will change). There is a deck area with lounge chairs in front of each tent and plenty of storage and hanging space for gear and clothes. There is a standing fan and lots of windows in the tents as well. Flashlights, mirrors, soap and shampoo, Kleenex, hand held fans and even emergency whistles are also provided. I really wanted for nothing. Drinking water containers are in the bathrooms and in the dining area for refilling bottles (best to bring your own water bottle). The dining area and the "living room" is covered with open sides. There is plenty of comfortable seating as well as hammocks to rest in during the heat of the day (it does get quite hot in the Darien). The library is well stocked and "happy hour" with nibbles and an honor bar is served there every evening. Now to the food. It is wonderful. Plenty of fresh veggies, meat and fish dishes, hot breakfasts with plenty of luscious local fruit and strong coffee early every morning. I brought home some of the salsa that was made fresh daily. If you're out birding all day the same quality picnic lunch is brought along complete with a folding table and a tablecloth! There is always cold water, drinks and snacks in the van wherever you go. The birding is world class in this area of course. We saw hundreds of species in just a few days and the local guides are amazing at spotting the birds (even the antbirds). Canopy Camp is in the middle of no where, but if you love to be close to nature this is your comfortable paradise? Hiking trails around camp are good and there's nothing like waking to the sounds of Howler Monkeys and Oropendolas. I can't recommend Canopy Camp enough.

Room Tip: Tent 1 is up the hill and away from any other tents. It was just being finished when I was there. Te...

I spent 6 nights at Canopy Camp in January (first week they were open) with a tour group and had a really good time and enjoyed the entire camp. Following the Canopy Family tradition, the room was comfortable, the food was good and the people were very helpful and friendly.

The idea of staying in a tent seemed a little daunting at first – worrying about bugs and privacy plus getting to the bathroom – but everything works well and is comfortable. But this was not your ordinary tent – two beds, teak floor, high ceilings and plenty of room. There was also electricity and fan, plenty of light if needed, nice decks to sit out on and enjoy the scenery, and separated enough that you are not right on top of your neighbor. I think the entire week I was there I only saw 2 mosquitoes, and not much made it past the mesh on the door. I was in tent 8 which looks out on the camp and to the mountains in the distance. Most of the other cabins have decks that look out into the forest but I am not sure they saw anything different. Either way they are very comfortable accommodations (the few things that were just off can be attributed to them having just opened – should be fixed soon so not even worth mentioning).

And if you are a birdwatcher (which is probably why you are here), the birding is great! Some trails around camp (watch out for the Capuchin monkeys!), plus just what is flying around will keep you busy. The tour packages will take you to other areas that offer an even greater diversity of species. One note – if you go to El Real, it is a long day of travelling.
It is a bit of a journey to get here. Roads in the Darien are “interesting” – you know it the second you cross into the province of Darien just by the road conditions! But it is worth the drive.

Thanks Carlos, Jenn, Raul and everyone else for a wonderful trip! Looking forward to coming back!
